I have 2 12AT7's and one 5687 per channel (add one 12AX7 per channel when playing vinyl) feeding the best SS amp I've ever had. Don't need more musicality ;)

Impedance can be an issue, and it's usuall overlooked; I've heard all kinds of suggested ratios between amps and preamps (10:1, 20:1, etc). In my case, preamp suggests 10-40kohm and the amp has 22 kohm, so I should be fine.

BTW, the Marsh has 4 kohm in balanced mode so there was an issue already.

Mine is not impedance matching issue. The noise floor is considered rising coz I could hear hiss from the speakers with nothing being played and volume is turned down to minimum.

The tube pre has 4 x 12AT7 and one 12AX7 in it currently.

All my rigs are dead quiet and you can stick your ears close right to the tweeters and it's no noise when everything (SS pre) is turned on.
Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin:

there is hiss then there is hum, each has its own cause(s).

when I used a BAT tubed pre with a BAT ss amp in a balanced configuration I found the rig to be dead quiet, prior to that I had varying amounts of noise between tubed pre's and my sand amps, of course the BAt gear had been engineered to work together, tubed gear will have high input impedances, I found some hissing is pretty much normal with single ended configs unless you can hear it from your listening seat I would not worry to much about it.

Interesting that over the weekend a gentleman called me who is interested in purchasing some Sound Lab speakers from a dealer in Chicago who has asked me to do a demo for his customer. We spoke yesterday and he presently is using a Marsh just like Ricardo's. This fellow has been using some Dunlevy IV's I believe he said for many years, he loves the Marsh along with his Conrad Johnson pre, I think he said a PV-5, but not sure. I am thinking maybe I should have him bring his amp to see if it will drive the planars, but not sure how well it would play with the BAT pre to start with.
