LSiFX's for LSi9's

Any members interested in swapping their 9's for my two week old FX's? Pretty much gonna dedicate my Rotel/LSi setup for CD audio and DVD-A and SACD and I think the 9's would out-perform the FX's for that role for surrounds. In a larger room for theater I would definitely want to keep the FX's. Gonna use the Harman/RTxxxi setup for home theater and the Sony/R's for some "mood music" in the bedroom. Yea I got Polks all over the damn house but man it is great. Never more than a few feet from great sound!
Might even be interested in selling the FX's outright. Not sure of the price though.

Greg,
I didn't realize that you have become a Polk dealer
9 is definitely sweeter for audio only setup...for my setup, that is. I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Polkatese,
Kind of wondering how the 7's would sound in the back. Never had a chance to listen to them anywhere.suds, suds and more suds! -
on 5.1 channels audio, I found the LSi7 to be less desirable, mainly because I it doesn't give me the same impact as the 9 (or even the Fx). For your setup, I have no doubt that the 9 will sound better. Put on Chris Botti SACD and Pink Floyd DSOTM to *feel* the instruments, once you have 'em.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Polkatese thanx..I do want that impact! Have not decided on a SACD/DVD-A..Denon ,Yamaha, Pioneer. Really wish somebody would manufacture a DEDICATED SACD/DVD-A player. I really do hate the word "universal". I'm really getting the bug to purchase one of these players..was hoping to put it off for awhile in hopes of price drops but man all I hear about is how good these two formats sound and it is just killing me. Gonna have to have one real soon!

polkatese it's not good to say that before the deal is made. You are making me want to keep my 9's in the rear!

hmph.

...nothing but the truth, so help me, Polk....
Greg, I agree with you. Why can't they make a DVD-A/SACD only unit, fuggetaboutdvd-v? In the mean time, I am pretty happy with the Philips SACD-1000, on redbook and SACD, it sounds very good! just not too crazy about the snake jungle behind the gears, though
Phuz, buddy! welcome back! how's the new gig? hope you are playing nice with your new friends
I thought there's a new law that states you can only have ONE pair of LSi9 to maintain sonic equality and justice within the Polk community? I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
A lot of the dvd-a discs have video on them too, so you kinda need the dvd-v player

Phillips..Hmmmm..Here is a great read for anybody looking to purchase a SACD/DVD-A player:

Give yourself ample time to put on a good read. For many this link may be familiar but for those not there it is.

Greg,
Check out this *universal* player if you are in the market: Marantz DV8400 . It has the best DAC in its price range, came highly recommended from a trusted authorized dealer where I've got my B&K. It *supposedly* even beats dedicated DAC in its price range. MSRP $1700, but I can get one for $1250 NIB autho from him. I can hook you up if you interested. For me, I am going to wait since I have no *justifiable* expense left, with the Denon 3800 and the Philips, I have the formats covered. Or you can also check out Denon 2900, Doc is very happy with it too.
Fireshoes,
your point is valid, but in most cases, the DVD-V portion is not strictly necessary to enjoy the DVD-A. Some of them have the line notes and 5.1 setup information. Btw, great setup! 15 in the back, you must be floatin' in audio nirvana as you listen to 5.1 audio
how's the Yamaha push? I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Polkatese, everything is good so far with the new gig. I'm still in training, but so far it looks like cake. I'm still looking for better opportunities though.

I can't wait till the checks start rolling in so I can finish my system (more Rotel gear!).
Maybe I'll just buy the F/X from greg and compare. Then I'll really seal in my reputation of hoarding LSi speakers.
-
Polketese, Thanks man for the offer on the Marantz..will get back to you on that one. Let me do some "investigative work" first.suds, suds and more suds!

how's the Yamaha push?
It does fine in my apartment. I try to keep the volume in check somewhat, but it still gets plenty loud. It's a bandaid receiver really. I had a Sony 945 (yuck) and then I won a Yamaha RXV740 at work, and my manager at work let me trade it in and pay the difference on the RXV2300. I'm trying to save for an amp right now. We carry Adcom here so I can get an employee accommodation price on it. My SpeakerCraft rep also reps Lexicon so I could probably get a deal there. The company we get Russound products from also allows me to get discounts on quite a few other products that we don't carry, like Parasound. So I've got quite a few options, now I just need the money.
-
Lexicon, eh??? hmm, 8B with employee accomodation, very sweet! I am jealous...need to pay those family tree services and see if they can come up with one that has your last name and mine somehow in the same branch

Greg,
I saw your setup on showcase, aaaawwesome! one quick observation, the right surround Fx seems to be too close to the corner, I think you will get better sound dispersion if you move the speak slightly to the left. You might have to move the picture a bit. Or it might be irrelevant by the time you have the 9. Don't you watch movies in this setup?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Polkatese,
Yea I agree with the FX to close to the wall. I have been moving them around some..even had them mounted on the rear of the side walls. It is a difficult room for speaker placement because of the many doors (3) and and the window. Just happened to be there when I took the pic. I also have a setup in the living room where everybody hangs and ultimately end up watching most movies there. That consists of the Harman Kardon with the RT600i's, RT25i's, PSW 350 and CSi30 center. But the Den with the Rotel and LSi's is MY ROOM..Everybody stay out..Where I go to regain my sanity. Man don't I sound like the selfish ****! Note: It gets real interesting around here when both systems are being used at the same time.suds, suds and more suds! -
Polkatese,
Thanks for the offer on the Marantz but will pass. Gonna try to find a Yamaha 2300 today. Couple of reasons for the choice which I will get into some time in the future. Jeez man it is starting to get real ugly behind my rack. Cable management just not my thing. Do have all the power cables away from everything though.suds, suds and more suds! -
Greg,
no problem! For me, the next SACD/DVD-A player has to have DVI so that cable management is an oxymoron...hopefully, and by then, B&K will come up with the actual implementation of DVI port that is currently sitting unused. We'll see...good luck with the hunting!I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Polkatese,
I ABSOLUTELY agree!!!!!!! Probably the reason I have not purchased one already. DVI..why has it not happened from the beginning. Is it really that big of a deal to incorporate into the units. Pioneer and Denon both have it but it is dedicated to a few of their own processors.

Getting off track just a little bit here.
LSiFX for LSi9's...anyone else interested?suds, suds and more suds! -
Greg,
I was playing around with my setup this afternoon. Set the B&K with DPL II on 7 speakers, boost the bass 3 db higher, set all speakers to large, crossover sets at 80 hz. Guess what, the sound that comes out of the Fx is tight and punchy, set the switch to dipole; imaging is great. Surprisingly, for 2 channel audio (redbook) this setup is very pleasant, tight, crisp, and no discoloration of sound. I also tried with direct dvd-a (eq is off) and the sound is very nice too. I don't know why is that, but I would say the fx has the potential of sounding as good as the 9 given this configuration. Btw, I also set the 9 with the Rotel as large (since I don't have a sub on the second system). I thought you might be interested to try 'em on your setup.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Polkatese,
Thanks for the info! I was looking at your system showcase pics and looks like the FX's are at listening level away from the walls back and sides. Hard to tell exactly. Think I'll try dropping them down about 18 inches from where they are now. Right now they are mounted against the wall with the tweeters just below my eye level when standing. Pretty much kept them at that level when I was moving them around. Jeez, my beer soaked brain didn't even think to move them down and away from the wall. Hey I even switched left and right speaker positions.
Man I used all kinds of speaker settings and crossover settings and still really didn't get the results I am looking for. I'll throw them on some speaker stands and move them about a little...see what happens.
Gregsuds, suds and more suds! -
you're welcome! mine sitting on a 34" Sanus stands (it went up by 4" since the picture on the showcase was taken). Good luck with the tweak....I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

OH!......MY......LORD!!!!!!!!!! Just finished hooking up the Yammy SACD/DVD-A player to my system. Put a listen on Steely Dan's "godwhacker" title off the "everything must go" DVD-A disk. Are you kidden me?!?!?! Freagin unbelievable sound! The LSiFX's are now still wall mounted but are about 1 foot above listening level set to Dipole mode. Also moved the recliner about 2 feet away from the rear wall the FX's are mounted to. The LSi15's are toed in about 5-7 degrees to the listening area and the LSiC is at ear height straight at the listening area. Man I wish someone from the forum was here to share this listening experience with me. Sorry about the rant but I think I'm about to have an ****!
Will post more pics for speaker location and expand on my review. My system isn't a bad listen for a drunkin' burnout high school dropout factory worker. Yes I grew up during the 70's...I call it the decade of intoxication. Again thanks to the members of this forum for all their input. I had no idea music could sound this good..uh..GREAT in my home!

greg,
congrats for your new found sound! glad to help! that SD-EMG is so awesome, in terms of recording quality!I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Polkatese,
I'm a BIG Steely Dan fan. And to listen to them in the DVD-A format is incredible.
It is sad but I'm not sure about the future of SACD or DVD-A. Went to circuit city yesterday to look for some disks in these two formats and the guy led me to the VHS section. Needless to say I found them on my own and the selection was minimal. Best Buy had a much better selection but still...I wonder. Plus we are at the mercy of the people that do the mixes in these formats.
Anyway I will be keeping the FX's in a large part due to you. There is a LOT to be said about speaker placement and room arrangement! From my experience can't say enough about it.
Would love to have Mantis drop in for a listen if he is in the area doing a H/T setup. He is but a stone's throw away..well almostsuds, suds and more suds! -
greg,
think of the fx as back-to-back LSi7
anyway, I am glad to hear that, you're right on, placement is everything! on multichannels audio, you have sound dispersion advantage by using the Fx. The other good one is Diana Krall SACD multichannels "the look of love", if you like jazzy tunes... I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.
