The early game consoles were a war between Atari, Colecovision. and Intellivision. They gave way when computer-based graphics got better (around Windows 95) and they lost a lot of ground to Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, and then Quake. I don't play anymore spent a lot of time playing the early consoles, and then especially Wolfenstein & Doom.

I'll be 50 in 2 short weeks and play with the Wii a little bit. I've always sucked at all video games so I did not vote as I don't qualify for the over 41 and kick arse catigory. Actually bought it for my wife she is 31 and thought she would like it for some exercise. She does beat me most times. Had a pong game when I was a wippersnapper.

28 and own a PS3. Actually don't use it for gaming that much, just don't have time. I play a little guitar hero now and then, and some Tiger Woods Golf.

I still love Bond and Smash Bros on N64, and my favorite game of all time is probably Counterstrike on PC. Used to play that for hours back in college.

35 and I primarily game on the Xbox 360. Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, Gears Of War 2, Call Of Duty 4, Call Of Duty: World At War, Street Fighter 4, Soul Calibur 4, and a ton of Burnout Paradise.

Getting older just means you can afford cooler toys. Goodbye 25" TV, hello 100" screen with 1080p projector and 7.1 surround. Never been a better time to be a gamer.

For God's sake, people, all of the new consoles come with parental controls. Caring parents use the tools provided to regulate their kids' consumption of media. In the case of the 360, you have rating lockouts and daily/weekly play timers built into the system.

I'm with apphd above, in that age group with a PS3 recently purchased, am building up to more games. Currently although I can actually play a real guitar? My 11 year old daughter is trouncing me on Guitar Hero III and she plays violin but not guitar! Obviously these are different abilities, and the learning curve is a bit longer for old dogs vs. big youth.

That's true, but the problem is that the vast majority of parents don't even use those, or realize that they're even available. It is cool that they include things like that though.

    LOL

Got a PS3 and only three games:
NASCAR - Its really hard, I play once a month for about an hour tops.
Fight Night - Played it once for about two hours, hasn't been played since.
Little Big Planet - Got it as a gift, never opened it. Never will.

It is a BluRay player first and foremost in our house.
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

Does anyone have any of the older game units like atari or the original nintendo?

Not anymore, but I started with the 1st Gen. consoles back in the 70's. The one generation before Colecovision. Didn't even ask for one, my dad brought one home one day, back in the day when he was also interested in cool stuff.

Since then it was pretty short list, C64 and straight into x86 gaming, and I haven't looked back. I missed on the Amiga period as I didn't have money for one. I do own two PS3's but I don't really play many games on them as I find PC gaming and games to be much better. Gran Turismo and sport games are the exception but first person shooters, flight simulators and strategy games are not consoles strong points.

    Oh, yes, 37 and counting.

That's true, but the problem is that the vast majority of parents don't even use those, or realize that they're even available. It is cool that they include things like that though.

Microsoft is trying to make parents more aware of the parental controls. They're putting info up in Best Buy, prominently displaying it on xbox.com with instructions on how to implement it, and putting info on the boxes and instructions in the box. If parents don't avail themselves of the option, it's no one's fault but theirs. The play timer in particular is a cool option, letting parents set a password so that only they can add more time or create unlimited play periods as a reward.

Though, if we're being honest, no kid should be running so free that he can be playing GTA4 in the house without his parents knowing anyway. I know if I had when I was a kid, I wouldn't have been sitting for a while. ;)

I think this poll misses an opportunity to reveal better data. The only data this poll provides are the numbers in each age group of people who saw the poll and own a system.

You should split each age group up into "I own a game console" "I don't own a game console", so we can see the proportions of each age group. For example, among all respondents who own a console system, let's say only 10% were between age 18-25. But you can't say that people age 18-25 are less likely to own a console, since you don't know the demographics of the respondents as a whole. It could be that that 100% of that age group owned a console system.

I own an Atari Flashback 2 console and I'm 41....does that count?

The Atari Flashback 2 is a replica of the original Atari 2600, right down to the joysticks. I purchased it 2 years ago from Target to ease the pain of my deprived childhood.

The Gran Turismo games are badass. I also like Forza Motorsport for the Xbox a lot...I think GT has the edge on Forza though.

Ummm. that sounds like a project for you ;) .. if you would like more data breakdown.. start your own poll. I was mostly interested in the age group that owns and plays video games. simple and satisfied my curiosity.

From the age group in here, of course this poll will be skewed. Mostly males on this forum and mostly in their 30's, 40's, and 50's, 60's. This hobby/forum doesn't attract the under 30 crowd as much. So knowing that, i wasn't surprised that the poll didn't skew more towards a younger video game crowd.

Now had I posted this poll in say a gamers forum.. I bet the results would have been quite a bit different. :D

I am 32 and own 3 PS3's (my youngest son is 15 and has one in his room and my oldest son is 17 and we recently bought him a 360 for Christmas) The second PS3 is broken in my hall closet waiting to go back to Sony for repair. The third PS3 is in my living room that is primarily used for HT and some occasional gaming. I have one or two PS2's around somewhere, one of which I take on deployments with me to keep me amused for the 4 months I am gone at a time, lol. Other than that I think I have an old school Xbox kicking around somewhere and that's about it, lol.
