The headline says it all. I just turned on my receiver and had the volume very low(-45) and was about to do a little listening to the tunes on the PS3 while online bowling, and click! I looked down and it said PROTECT on the display and then shut off:mad: It wasn't hot as I had just turned it on like 5 minutes ago. I unplugged it and then plugged it back up and turned it on and the PROTECT was gone, but now it has a low hum from the speakers regaurdless of volume, and input. I've only had it for a couple of weeks:confused: It is a Marantz SR6001 refurb which I purchased from accessories4less. Anyone got any ideas on what could have happened? Has anyone had any problems with products purchased from accessories4less? I really don't want to box this damn thing up and ship off, and certainly don't want to undo all of my connections that I so carefully and neatly layed out:( Do you guys think this could be a lemon or what? Any help or advice would be encouraging:(

Hmm, if it were just consistently going into protect mode I'd say make sure one of your speaker wires hadn't come loose and crossed with another. Check that anyway, but the hum and no protect mode isn't very encouraging for that diagnosis. HOpefully accessoriesforless will honor any kind of warranty / return.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Just out of curiosity, what speakers are you running with it?

Good luck getting the situation resolved.

I have the Monitor 11ts running on it. It's supposed to have a 1 year warranty from marantz, I just dread going through the hassel. Do you think I should try a master reset? Something tells me that's pointless as I don't think that will resolve the hum:( It didn't go into PROTECT again, but the hum is there. This is my first marantz product and this sucks. I thought marantz was good stuff, and I'm aware that even the best have a few problems though. I was really enjoying the receiver until this happened. Hell, I just ordered the audyssey mic for it yesterday:(

I wouldn't judge Marantz just on this incident. It's quality gear, and remember....it was a refurb. Sometimes ya win-sometimes, well you know.

Hope it all gets sorted to your liking.

Has anyone had any problems with products purchased from accessories4less?

I have ordered "new" components from Accessories4less twice, both times I was sent refurbs, supposedly by mistake. They took care of it each time, but I am leery of buying any electronics from them now. I still get my speaker wire there when I need it, but that's it.

I'm not judging Marantz on this one:). Everything I've heard about them has been good. Like I said, no matter how good the manufacturer, there will always be some problems. I guess it's like he said in the previous reply: sometimes you win and sometimes you don't. I hope the guys at accessories4less will take care of this for me. When I ordered it, the salesperson seemed very knowledgable on the products and was very nice. I just hope this doesn't end up costing me more money, because if that is the case I just should have spent more on a better new unit:o The hassel of rewiring/shipping/ etc. sucks:mad: Oh well, any other advice?

    Hi rallyshark,

As your unit is a refurb, make sure it is was built to run correctly on US power - you may think this sounds stupid, but I purchased a brand new SR-8001 off of eBay in Hong Kong, that ran on 240V as per our specifications here in Australia ,but as per below, Marantz design their units to run incertain countries, depending on the last letter designation.

My SR-8001 went into protect mode, not long after I had it, and I had to send it back to Hong Kong for repairs (at no cost to me). It came back and all was fine, but then it wouldn't turn back on - again, had to send it back to Hong Kong, this time at my expense. I love the Marantz product and thought something else must have been wrong. According to the eBay seller, the surround channels blew due to misuse - CRAP! They actually blew when I wasn't even using them - only had FM radio on, at low volume. I decided to investigate with Marantz Hong Kong myself, who had conducted the recent repairs and they advised me this:

Regarding your questions, below is my answer:

    1) Your product model number SR-8001/K1G is a version designed for China & some other Asian countries, but not includes Australia, because of supply voltage and safety standard difference reason. The SR-8001/K is designed for 220V a.c. power supply while Australia model SR-8001/N or A version is designed for 230V and 240V a.c. and it is fully comply with relevant Australia standard and safety requirement.

Hence, I never did receive the unit back from Hong Kong and received a refund of the purchase price. In my signature, you will see reference to another Marantz, which is designed for Australia and it has never missed a beat - check your model number and make sure it is actually designed for US use.

    Hope this helps.

Just from reading this I'll never buy a Marantz again!

    Why?

As to the OP, I'd send it back. It's a pain, but something's definitely wrong with it.

After further testing, and pushing the receiver to see if it will go into PROTECT mode again, it hasn't. I even ran it up around -5 with full surround and A+B fronts for a couple of hours and it hasn't skipped a beat? I still have the low hum from the fronts(can't hear it from the center). Now I'm beginning to question if that is even a problem. It could have been doing it all along I suppose, but I think I would have noticed:confused: You can only hear the hum if you're close to the speaker. I think I hear it sitting in my normal listening position, but then again, I'm looking for it now. Am I right in thinking this "slight hum" is a problem or what? Should I still try to get the unit exchanged? I'm worried I will get the "unable to duplicate problem" response if I return it. Oh, and for those familiar to these receivers, I get the hum even in "pure direct" mode as well. Am I just being too bitchy or should return it:confused:

Might depend on how loud it is. If it's audible from your listening position then it could be a ground loop hum (60hz) or it could be a problem with the amp. If you have to get right up to the speakers to hear the hum/hiss, that's probably normal.

If it's a ground loop hum you could either use a cheater plug to convert your 3-prong cord into a 2-prong without ground. For testing purposes you might also try unplugging everything from the wall except the amp and see if the hum remains.
