I should have added, upgrade something else to my poll. As a matter of fact, how much of a difference would a csi a6 make for me?

It all depends on your room configuration.

    Bevo,

I have a CsiA6 with my RTiA5's and love the sound. My room is quite large so I went with the 6. Guess your decision is based on how your 4 is handling your room size and config. I have yet to get my rears and have asked the same question as you regarding the FXi series vs RTiA3 bookshelves. Sure would be nice if some actual owners would chime in and share their input with us. Good luck and enjoy.

My room is 24x14. I sit in the front 2-3rds of the room dead center. In all honesty, I would go 5.1 now after hearing how much better the fxi a6's sound compared to the rm8's I had. The problem is that (I know this sounds stupid) I don't have room for a 5.1 but I do for a 7.1 . I set closer to the tv then my wife wants to, so I have a chair that I set in front of the couch when I watch and listen, and everything is setup for me because she couldn't care less about HT. The couch will not let me put a 5.1 setup in because it is in the way.

For 7.1 I have 2 speakers beside me, and 2 behind the couch. If I went just 5.1 with speakers just behind the couch they are to far away for 5.1 but sound fine with 7.1. I've tried both setups and 7.1 sounds best.

The rear speakers are farther away from me though then my sides or rears and I think an upgrade over the rm8's would really help the sound back there.

Another option would be a pair of RTI6's. I have the same fronts as you and they match just fine. You may be able to get a great deal on a pair. As far as the center goes, I would get the A6. The biggerthe center channel the better IMHO.

Well - I still have my RTI4s as my surrounds in my 5.1 setup - sounds great!

I don't have a multi-seat theater room - just a couch, and its mostly me that is 'critical' of sound quality, so direct radiating speakers work well - and since I do listen to alot of mult-channel music another reason for direct radiating surrounds.

If you can get the RTIA3s from Polk Direct, then they are a fantastic bargain!

So, your choice all depends on your setup and preferences.

Can someone explain how multi channel music works. I listen to music in stereo 2 speaker mode thinking that that best duplicates a concert (musicians in front of me). Also would like to know if I should run my center speaker for music or stick with 2 speaker config. Thanks for your input.

fxi a6 seems better overall, less directional

Wow, this thread is only 4 years old........Hey bevo, you still trying to figure out which on to get??

@ Tung, actually, the FXiA6 is multi directional where the A3 is a direct radiating speaker, nicely done here..........

I was reading and researching to replace my RTi a9 rears. the conclusion is that rear surrounds shouldn't be very directional. you shouldn't have felt where it was "Exactly" coming from. So the Fxi a6 will be great for the side surrounds. for the rear surrounds, I'd recommend rit a1 should be enough. not much base is needed from the rears always, as you will be crossing them over around 80hz anyways.

Surrounds.............Empty for now. But waiting for a Fxi A6 deal on polk ebay.

I see the point you're tying to make, but then you contradict yourself. Unless, you're confused on what rear surrounds are.

The A6 is not only good for surrounds, but for rear, or back surround speakers. As you state, you shouldn't feel where the sound is exactly coming from.

The RTiA3 is a direct radiating speaker, coming from a direct source, the FXiA6 is a bi/dipole speaker, sound coming from a multiple source, hence, indirect sound.

As far as crossing them over at 80hz, maybe that's what you cross them at instead of the infinite way you put it for the end all of set ups.

And since you're in research mode, you can try this to better understand what you're trying to convey to the past of four years ago.

I was trying to find info on bipole and dipole without much success. Those diagrams answered all my questions. Thanks!

Hmmm I was just messaging someone about Rti a1 through craigslist too, lol. I guess i'll do fxi a6 on the sides and a4 on the rears. :)

Actually, I can't wrap my head around this theory (even though I think it's true). Listeners shouldn't be able to pin point where the sound is coming from, so we use Fxi type of speakers. BUT would we still feel the sound of an airplane coming from behind to in front of us? Wouldn't the Fxi speakers muddy what the movie sound track was trying to achieve?
