Hi, I ran across this forum while trying to find out some info about my Monitor 10's that I got little while ago. I got them from my dad because he never used them, and they were taking up space in a closet. They look great and sound AMAZING! While trying to find some information about these speakers I found out that there are multiple versions of them. Does anyone know which version these are?

THANKS!

Yep, original Monitor 10's with Peerless tweets. They've even got the uber-sweet gray paper gaskets around the drivers. Some damn good sounding speakers. You'd be hard pressed to find anything new that would sound better for the prices those can be had at.

I'd love to get a pair of 10's exactly like that someday, to match my Peerless 7A's.

My 10's are slightly different. Engraved above the tweeter it says "Polk Audio" and below that "Silver Coil Dome" Also the two thin "ridges" that angle down on either side of the tweeter, in my 10 they stick straight out horizontally.

The Mid-Ranges do not have aluminum trimming around them as seen above.

    Otherwise, mine look identical.

Any more detail you can giv me. The back label simply says Monitor 10 and then has a serial number.

    thanks.

    Fafner, welcome too.. :D
YOU have the Mon 10b's with the SL2000 tweeters. Little bit newer than the other ones........Upgrading the tweeter to the RDO-194 will make a HUGE difference for you (So I have read anyway) Polk CS has them...# in the upper right hand side of page. Tell them you are a CP member and you will be treated right....

    +1

Also, that trim around the drivers is just thick gray paper/cardboard, not aluminum.

Are the tweeters "plug & play?" In other words after I get the current one out, does the new one have "blades" that plug into an exisitng socket? Or is there actual unwiring and rewireing that would have to be done? If so, is soldering necessary, etc.? Sorry to be so dumb about this but I have never taken a speaker apart, let alone a Polk. Thanks in advance for your help.

Since you have have the SL2000's currently, the RDO-194's are "plug n play" as you say. There are male spade connectors on the tweeter and male connectors on the wiring harness... Easy peezy :D

Just a note to the OP...The RD0 replacement tweeters aren't direct replacements for the Peerless tweeters, so they won't work in your speakers. I love the Peerless tweets though, so I wouldn't really consider that a downfall.

Yeah, I love the peerless tweeters too, I don't plan on replacing them.

I think the beveled edge 10B's with RDO's in them are the best combo for 10's out there.....The 6503 driver's seem much smoother than the 6500's IMHO. I really like the orignal Peerless tweets as well, but those older speakers seem to lack bottom kick that later versions picked up. Just my opinion, and the best part is no matter what you choose they are ALL fantastic speakers to own!

I just noticed that my speakers have the beveled edges, so does that change what the other people have told me about my 10's?

Fafner...Very good, all the info you got is correct. You will like the RDO194 replacement tweeters, they pop right in and out without any problems or adjustments. I took that pic awhile back, and now have a set of RDO's I could put in. Very happy with the improvement!

The "outies" on the speakers go IN the "innies" on the wiring...hehe

Yep, the bevel edged models USUALLY have the SL2000 tweeters, originally. You are better off using the tweeter as the reference, as there have been other combination "out there"

They should really be called "Mon 10C's" but there never was an official designation for that, unlike the Mon 7c's, which also have the beveled faces and the SL2000 tweeters.

That's a good call....There are several 10B's out there, with 7C's matching up to the later 10B's....Crazy

Thank you. But are you saying that I should keep the tweeters I have and not replace them withe suggested replacement?

And...the male to female connection makes more sense....male to male sounded just a bit off-color :)

No Fafner, I would definitely replace the SL2000's with the RDO-194, if you have the coin. But you should listen to them in your system, with your music and your ears. There have been scattered people who like the sound of the SL2000's. I am not one of them, and I think the majority of the people would agree. I do know that the RDO will give you a much 'smoother' sound.

My experience is the same as Kcoc...No question RDO-194 is what you want, especially as you turn up the volume:)

I will say that I really like the SL2000 in my Monitor 5B surrounds though, it gives it that extra kick at lower volumes without messing with my fronts.
