TIME TO LET MY 10's GO AFTER 26 YEARS ? ?

Hello,

I have a chance to buy a pair of Boston Acoustic VR1 (maybe 80 hours on them) like NEW for $200. I have owned my monitor 10's for 26 years and I am not sure what to do. I have replaced the Sl-2000 with the RDO's & was planning to do a x-over upgrage with Ben.

The speakers are a little to big for my room 11x12 and they sound awesome buy only in the sweet spot.

I am not sure if I should spend the money on the x-over upgrade or get the BA's. They cost $600 new and I cannot pass this deal.

If anybody has any thoughts or have listened to the BA VR1's VS the Monitor 10's please let me know.

I could always just keep the 10's and if I ever buy a house could set them up in a larger room.

Hate to post this on a POLK site!

THANKS

I would keep them. And later when you get around to it, do the x-over mod. That way you would have a hotrod pair of speaks to swap in & out if ya wanted to.

Have no experience with the VR1's though.

I am wondering what people think about how these two speakers compare sound wise. I have heard them both in my room at different times with slghtly different gear. My take was the RTA 15s seem to have a smaller stage and sound more laidback. Highs seem too smooth.
The LS 90s seemed to have a more open top end and bigger stage but sounded a little wooly and had more bass impact but the sounded like it was to heavy in the bass and they sounded ported, which they are . Any thoughts on which people prefer in their experience?? Thanks

About the same MSRP as the Monitor 10's....$600 vs $670..
worth a try I guess, but I would definitely keep your Moni10's and upgrade the Xovers.

Keep them. You will regret it if you sell them.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Boston Acoustics hasn't made an interesting loudspeaker in over a decade. I'd keep what you have and they look fantastic.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

    THANKS Dorokusai.

I plan to keep them no matter what.

Those BA were made in 2004 I think but I totally understand where you are coming from.

They do sound pretty good in my small room.

Glad to hear you'll be keeping the 10s.

I have had a pair of 10Bs for about the same amount of time you have, and they still captivate me.

I recently dove into setting up a home theater system, having my 10Bs as the fronts and RTi speakers elsewhere. Something kept knawing at me so I went ahead and got RTi speaker for the fronts also, and it is like I feel guilty about that! Perhaps I should have played with the original system more before making that last purchase.

Fortunately I have some space and can set up a 2 channel system in another room with the 10s, but I know I would regret getting rid of them.

I haven't ventured into upgrading the cross-over or tweeter yet on the 10s, so any input you may have there would be great. What is the most noticeable change/benefit?

YES I am going to keep the 10's :)

I do have a chance to get a pair of Definitive Technology BP8 for $400. They are like new and have been in storage. I am not not sure if that is a good deal and do not know anything about the BP8.

No matter what the 10's will stay.

    Peabody,

You had me wondering about the BP8s so I did a little surfing (always enjoying learning). Seems like the price is a good deal (over half off from new). I could not find much in the way of reviews over all, but did at the following link:

    http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/floorstanding-speakers/definitive-technology/bp-8/PRD_120915_1594crx.aspx

At this site most folks appeared to like them, some were a bit more critical. You can check out what they have to say. At the Definitive Technology site there were only 2 customer reviews for what that is worth.

I don't think I have heard them myself, though I know they were carried at a home theater store I visited locally. The speakers seem interesting, being dioplole with speakers on the front and back. I read that spacing off the wall was important (2-3 feet I think). Of course hearing is the test, as well as hearing in your space too.

Might be a fun experiment. Would be interested in hearing what you come up with.

    Good luck!

Glad your going to keep the 10's. I has a pair with Peerless tweeters that sounded very sweet, gave them up do to a lack of space and still regret it.

My experience with Def Tech BP 8's is that they were very good for HT. Bi polar design gave them a nice sound stage for movies but I did not care for them for 2 channel music.

Those look like they're brand new!! You obviously take very good care of your possessions.

Those are the 10's that are going to be real collectible someday...You don't see many in that kind of shape. I'd definitely hang on to those, whether or not you currently have the space for them. You'll regret selling them if you do.

I think they're 2 different animals. I put some BA A-150's up against the monitor 10 last week in our living room, the BA can't image as well, they are extremely detailed though. I had the VR-950's and they had the Lynnefield tweeter which I think is a top 5 all time tweeter. Not sure what the VR-1's have for a woofer but I think what the polks really do well is integrate midbass and bass into th eoverall sound without making it boomy. I think there is a place for the New England sound and the Polk sound, you'll have to start a new system somewhere else in your house!
