Ok, So I have read a few of your posts and recommendations but hit me again.... :)

I have my 7.1 Receiver hooked up to my A9's for fronts, a Proficient Audio Center and ceiling speakers with no rears. I have a brand new DSW400 sub that is about mid wall also. I only listen to the surround when watching movies which is very rarely. SO, I 95% of the time have the Yamaha receiver on 2-channel mode (listening to music) on the A9's and sub only. What are the best settings, if any AND will it really benefit from say like an Adcom amp if only listening to music cd's? I do like good clean loud music but I'm fairly out of it when it comes to know-how technical knowledge with this stuff. Your help is appreciated,

Thanks guys,

If you do majority music then ditch the receiver and get a pre amp and amp combo or get a pre amp with HT bypass. That was the biggest leap in sound quality with my SDA's.

I would add an amp, but you also did not say what your source is for cd's.

I have the 1800 used only as a pre currently. I find the best settings for stereo is either "Pure Direct" (no sub) and "straight" (active sub).

That's one fine AVR you have there. Your 9's are very efficient at 8ohm / 90dB...not a hard load to drive at all. What exactly do you feel you're missing? Especially mated with a sub to free up some of the bottom end it even makes it that much of an easier load for your AVR.

The Yammie is just fine used as a pre as long as it doesn't leave you wanting. You might want to consider your source as a possible upgrade. But before you start tossing money out the window you really have to address exactly what you think your system is lacking.

He did say he likes good clean loud music. An amp will help partially, but to me, I take it as him wanting more musicality from his system. Don't want to put any words in his mouth so he can correct me if I am off target. If thats the case, I'd look at a different source for spinning those funny little disks.

Hmmm, I really guess there's nothing "missing" persay.......... I just have to turn up the receiver at least half way to really hear the beauty.....But even with my old 1300 Yamaha (100w) and NHT ST4's, you still had to pretty much turn it up to really hear what they can do. I guess the new receiver and speakers arent missing anything, I am merely reading other posts where everyone is saying the AT's are very power hungry. Im happy now, just thinking the speakers may sound better with an external amp. No funds at the moment anyway, so will see how it goes.

Thanks for your comments they really help !

My AVR put out 140 watts /ch. I struggled with the decision to add an amp and felt the same way you do. I finally added an Emo XPA-3 and went to 200 watts/ch. The sound from my RTiA9's became much richer and more detailed at all volume levels and it was a great upgrade.

Agreed on the concept of adding an external amp for the mains and perhaps a tubed cd player to the mix. There are many amps worthy of being considered, especially if you are willing to go used.

    Thanks in advance,

That's correct 200 watts or more per channel will do for powering just the A9's. The more power the better.
