Thanks Roy that explains it :)

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

I don't know about the "SE" version of the Oppo BDP-83 but, Amazon has the "normal", SACD capable one for $499.99 shipped. A whole lot cheaper than $1200-$1300 !

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002EEP3MK/ref=asc_df_B002EEP3MK995419?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B002EEP3MK&tag=cnet-3317-20
I dont think $499.00 is out of line for a player that does literally everything and does it well at this time, of course prices will go down more over time. But for $1295.00 I think I would look into getting a seperate SACD player and getting the standard Oppo for BluRay only.

Oppo is going to announce a less than $499 player on or about Jan 10. If you are looking for a stellar SD DV/BD player without the analog outputs (HDMI only most likely) hold onto your cash until then and see if it will suit your needs.

HDMI only is pure speculation on my part. Nobody is posting about it yet, but Oppo said they will announce on Jan 10.

I have the Oppo bdp-83. It blows away my 1st generation ps3 for both blu-ray and dvd playback.
With it's current firmware upgrade, It's better than my denon dvd-2930CI upconverting dvd player for dvd playback.

Well, I just dunno where they could cut cost and still maintain the ABT processing without doing away with something. Public opinion has been that many would like a player w/o all of the universal features such as DVD-A/SACD playback, and A/V analog outputs. Like I said, pure speculation on my part. They may be doing an entirely different unit. Either way, if you can wait and since you don't really want DVD-A/SACD capability, you may want to check out the new player. It's only a couple weeks off.

I have read some comparisons and it seems the SE is holding it's own very well with Sony. What about the -83 leaves you wanting "more"? Have you listened to the -83 or do you just use it for HT?

I am not looking for all the lights, bells, and whistles. I just want a player that has a good blu-ray presentation as well as a good DVD presentation. I am far from a videophile as 2ch is my passion.

    Thanks for the info guys.

so get the ps3 and be done with it

My stock Oppo 83 is ok for CD playback but is just not up to snuff in my book. I actually prefer listening to my Onkyo DX-C390 for CD playback. It simply out plays the Oppo in every aspect. The Onk is very, very dynamic & musical. The Oppo just sounds "heavy" to me in my system. I actually thought about the upgrade but I think I'll pass.

I haven't read anywhere where the Oppo SE is holding it's own with the Sony. If anything the Sony SCD -XA5400ES is being hailed as Sony's best yet, outplaying all their other highly coveted players. I think Oppo has a long way to go to catch up.

But isn't the Onkyo just a 6 disc CD changer that retails for about $200.00?

I think the Oppo leaves a bit on the table for redbook. I am hoping the SE upgrade is an improvement.

That Sony player is quite a step up from your Onkyo. I am sure you be pleased. I would love to compare the two for myself. I just cant swing 1.5k.

Joe, if you just want it for the BluRay playback there are a number of very good players for around $150. LG, Panasonic, even Sony. Look for the reviews that talk about start times, stremming capability, Netflix, You Tube, etc., media port for jump drive or camera card, etc.

That it is...but don't let the price & the fact that it can spin 6 discs sway your opinion. I've had it for awhile when I went thru a few other players. Onkyo for some reason or another just builds great sounding players. The Sony is still on my radar though.

My Samsung is good but you could do better. I believe we were saying to get your read on and compare the players in that price range. You'll do just fine at that price level.

    Good luck!!

I bought the BD370 model. It cost half as much as the BD390. The difference is the 390 is wireless, the 370 needs a cable for Netflix, etc. I found mine on Newegg for $159 shipped before Christmas. It actually had better reviews than the 390, but they are essentially the same player. Both of these players upsample to 1080 for regular DVDs. I'm going with a 2.1 system with the big screen and BluRay. I don't play music in the living room. I think my situation is very much like your's Joe. Music has it's own room, HT in another.

I wonder how long manufacturer's like Marantz can make a $6,000 BluRay player??

As long as people will buy it I reckon.

I honestly think that there is still a huge market for a super high-end UDP. Though Oppo is making a helluva player, it is by no means a "no compromise" solution. There are people out there that want the very best and are willing to pay for it. I am just glad that Oppo has raised the bar for affordable excellence.

Companies like Denon,Marantz,Krell and a list of others will continue to make high-end players because there's a lot of folk who buy that high-end gear. If it weren't for those players like Denon and Marantz those features wouldn't trickle down to the players most of us CAN afford. I myself have been holding out on the BR player only because i have 300+ SACD and DVD-audio disc's that i will want my next player to continue to play. As it is right now i own a Denon 3910 and 3930 both of those players have had the trickle down effect from a 5000.00 player. I also have a music room and a HT room and I don't think either one of the Denon players sound near as good as my Sony X77es player for 2ch. I also want a player i can keep everything in the digital domain until it goes to the speakers. After i was spoiled on the Denon-link I just don't think i would ever go back to the extra cabling involved with analog outputs.
    just my 2cents guys

What features would those be? Denon and Marantz started out with re-badged Funai BD players with outrageous prices. Not even sure they have developed their own players yet.

If you want to save some cash, my vote is for the Sony S350 / 360.
The only issue I have with my 350 is the slightly 'long' load time of discs, which is only an issue with me due I am an impatient person.
