I'm thinking Oppo BD-83.

Any other suggestions?

How is the regular DVD presentation of regular DVDs on these players?

I really don't need all the jazz that comes with the Oppo. I have an NAD T765 and a Sharp Aquos. I just want to be able to play blu-rays and DVDs on it but with excellent quality.

Actually I use the Denon in my 2ch rig for SACD playback. I have and earlier model Oppo in my HT rig. I think it is an Oppo 960 . . . I can't remember, haven't had my second cup of coffee yet.

I forget who it was but someone on this site...in a post documented objective measurements showing that the Oppo was the #2 (DVD)upconverting player on the market #1 being Toshiba...that along with much to do about Oppo picture quality. on Blu-rays..I would not know...as I have both a PS3 and a Pioneer Elite...that put on wonderful Blu-ray pictures.

It must be pretty cool, though, to have your 'wife' say, hey how about a BDP?

Perhaps someone who owns an Oppo can step in here!

The oppo is probably the best all around player. I just picked up the pioneer bdp 320 and am happy with it. Great picture and sound for 2 bills. If you could afford the oppo,go with it.

The Oppo's nice. Blu-ray, DVD, DVD-Audio, SACD... and they just added media streaming from DLNA servers in a beta firmware, which works amazingly well considering it's in beta. I couldn't be happier with mine.

Hearing, I bought both my sons BRP for Christmas this year. I paid $129 at Frys for these Samsungs, I will have to check the model. Anyway, excellent DVD and BR playback.

Fast loading and streams from Netflix and BB. SInce I have an account we tried several HD shows and was quite impressed with the quality and how you would not be able to tell the video was hardcopy or streaming.

If interested shoot me a PM and I send you the model number.

The SE upgrade is only for those running off the analog outputs. If you're sending over HDMI, it does nothing for you. There's also another company offering an upgraded version with more modifications, but I can't recall their name offhand.

what brand is your TV? usually best to buy the same brand blu ray plaayer. i had a samsung tv with a panny blu ray player and it was ok. but then went with a samsung blu ray player and it took it up a whole bunch in picture quality using HDMI. wow. i didn't think there would be a difference. but trust me there was.

stick with same brands. if your tv is a samsung check into the 3600. 7.1 analog outs. hdmi, and can stream movies using netflix, youtube, pandora, blockbuster.

i waited till Best Buy dropped the price by $70 and got mine for $229 :) never been happier.

I'm going to go with the LG-390 due to it's great reviews and the fact that I only want video service from a bluray player, plus Netflix & Youtube aren't included with the Oppo.:)

I agree and buy a cheaper player. Paying 1200 for a Oppo is insane as manufacturers are always upgrading these players year to year. If you just want to watch movies and don't care about online content, get a good solid one that has a good pic but is cheap. Most people who watch BluRay don't even sit the proper distance from their TV/screen to even take full advantage of 1080P, most of them see 720p and think that they are getting the best. Unless you have the $$$$ and are really into a dedicted home theater setup, then get a Panasonic BD30 or BD80.

I am not looking for all the lights, bells, and whistles. I just want a player that has a good blu-ray presentation as well as a good DVD presentation. I am far from a videophile as 2ch is my passion.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Where did you get the $1200.00 price Bill? Oppo site lists it for $899.00 for the special edition.

I don't know about the "SE" version of the Oppo BDP-83 but, Amazon has the "normal", SACD capable one for $499.99 shipped. A whole lot cheaper than $1200-$1300 !
