TSi 100's or Nearfield Monitors
Alright, here's a question for you blokes. I have currently a pair of TSi 100's, but recently my receiver died, and to replace it will cost about $400 or so dollars.
To make a long story short, I do studio work but I use headphones for that (AKG K240), but I also do most of my audio listening (at least currently) at almost point blank range (1-2 ft. from the speakers mostly). Bottom line:
Worth investing in a new receiver for $380 (Harmon Kardon 3490 or Denon DRA-297) and use the TSi 100's.
-or-
Get a pair of Yamaha HS-50M's ($180 each), JBL LSR 2325P's ($200 each), or Yamaha MSP3's ($165 each), or (Lessis suggestion) M-Audio Studiophile BX5a ($240/pair).
The first two are bi amped internally, and none require an external amp.
I rarely listen to music farther an a few feet away, and I do enjoy a fairly warm sound but accuracy is important.

Add to your list of NF monitors to try, the BX5a from M-Audio. I use a pair of these, they are roughly in the price range you are looking at, and they sound very good. I use them for studio playback, as well as pre-recorded. Very happy with them. (until I move on to the Dynaudio's..);)

Thanks, I added them, they're probably the cheapest pair on the list lol. Dynaudios cost a small fortune, but I'm not sure they're worth the cost. For example, the original studio standard was a Yamaha NS-10M which was a subpar stereo speaker, but someone discovered it made an excellent monitor for seeing what things sound like from a ghetto blaster and such equipment so it became a studio monitor and began to fly off the shelves as studios picked them up. Most recordings are geared to ordinary folks with the Sony micro hifi or HTIB, or their cars because thats what most have. Rarely are recordings geared to sound good on $10000 systems because the record companies wouldn't sell enough recordings to make a profit (which is kinda the point), and as a result of the lack of critical listening from people, the loudness factor has gone up in recordings over the decades, as has the distortion.
