I was looking at a few Adcom 555's and Carver tfm35 and 45 on ebay. leaning towards the adcom. would the Adcom GFP 555 be the best choice for a pre-amp? new to amp/pre-amp stuff. I've always had receivers powering these since they were new and always had clipping problems. I guess after doing a little reading on here that I will be doing some work on the speakers too. Any other suggestions for amps are welcome.

    Welcome to the Club!

The Adcom 555 would be a good choice for a amp, the Adcom 750 pre-amp would
    be a great choice.

I used an Adcom 535 back in the day with my 10B's. I always wished I had the 555, but couldn't swing it on my high school kid budget.

Just be carefull buying amps from E-bay. I would buy from audiogon before taking a chance on the bay. Adcom,Carver,Rotel,B&K,Parasound,Emotive, would serve you well and at a used price, won't break the bank.

+1, I have had nothing but good experiences on the 'gon....and most of the time, if I was driving distance from the gear, sellers were more than happy to audition it for me in their homes and let me pick it up there and then. That way at least you know what things sound like and that they're in working order. I'd buy from them even if I couldn't audition!

I have never heard the 10b's but I have both GFP555 and GFA555 and can tell you that they are great with polks. Hold out for a nice set for a good price and you won't be disappointed. I bought from ebay but agree with the others that the 'gon would be a safer route.

Let us know how it turns out!

Why the focus on Adcom and Carver? In my experience, Carver amps don't do well with low impedance loads (like the old Polks) anyway. I have used Yamaha amps to drive my 10B's for years with great success; I currently use a DSP-A1 (even with Blu-Ray external audio in). There's even a switch for low impedance loads, although I believe I leave it in the "8 Ohm" position (although I could check if it's important). BTW, I had bad experiences with (old) Denon and Carver amps in that they blew fuses (at high volume) with a 10B load.

Hard to believe there is another Yamaha fan at Club Polk. I thought I was the only one. The DSP-A1 is a neat piece of machinery. One of these days I will pick that up for the collection. I have Polk Monitor 10A's with the peerless tweets and love they way they sound with my Yamaha M-65 amp and C65 pre-amp. There are many good 2 channel amps out there. Yamaha, Adcom, Carver, Luxman, SAE, Soundcraftman to name a few on the vintage side. I am sure you will be happy with Adcom. It is a quality product.
