OPPO DV-980H 'universal' DVD/CDP... any good?

Would be interested to hear from others who own this 'universal' player. I've had mine for a few weeks now, and CD/HDCD/SACD sound really great!

Upscaled DVD's look great too, but for some reason, I hear some 'static' or noise when playing some DVD soundtracks. I wonder if it's the player or just poorly recorded/transferred DVD's.

How do you like your 980H for 2-channel high-end audio use?

Get a Denon 2900 and I can mod it real cheap.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks
    Ben

How deep in the audiophile hole do you want to go? I think the Oppo is alright (I owned that model for awhile) but if your fussy, you'll want more.

I've had the DV-980H for about a year. I ran it through my Onk 805 both digital and analog. The analog in pure audio sounds better than digital into the Onk. I was pretty happy with the sound. A few months ago I put a Yaqin tube buffer in the analog line between the Oppo and the Onk. That really opened up the soundstage and added a touch of tube musicality, making it even more enjoyable. A couple of months ago I picked up a Jolida JD-100A. The sound from the Jolida is even more refined and the soundstage even more 3-dimensional and "accurate".

I have one and will not use it for 2 channel.
One of the worst sounding 2 channel units i ever listened too in my system.
Extremely harsh highs, VERY bright muddy mids and no real bottom end.
A Denon 2910 is way better sounding for about the same kind of money and has a better picture to boot.
Even still the 2910 is not a awesome sounding peice of gear but compared to the Oppo it is night and day.

I have an old Yamaha I use but it seems to have its limitations..sounds a lot like the critiques of the Oppo made above....

Seriously considering a move to a used Denon DVD 3910...seems like a nice mid-fi unit that should blow the Oppo out of the water...then there are mods...that I can't do myself which can take this player to another level. Heavy unit, good transport...heavy duty anti-vibration, decent DACs, Denon's Waveform processing....and also good video chips fo DVD if that's a concern..!
