Mmmmm... that anthem would sound nice on a passive pre. ;)

Did the new links work for pictures?

Be careful of passive pre's they aren't everyone's cup of tea and need very careful matching to achieve maximum synergy.

I'm just saying..............be sure..... or atleast get something that can be easily flipped if you don;t like it.

    Passive pre's are certainly different.

    Thanks,
I think since I can pick up the GFA5500 for $250, that will get me started and I will reconsider my 'I can never afford to get into tubes' attitude and look at that down the road. :D

For clarification, are you refering to tubes in the pre amp, the power amp or both?

    Thanks.

I WOULD NOT BUY THAT UNHEARD.

I demo'ed those 1Cs yesterday; They sounded nice; speakers are in overall very nice condition; some scratches here and there that could easily be touched up with some furniture marker.

I don't think he runs the website... those are just his version (the 1-C studios...)

I hear you loud and clear.

Someone is coming over to buy my HK AVR7000 this afternoon for $175. He was offering to trade (plus a little cash TBD) The following:

    1982 Yamaha M50 Power Amp
    1982 Yamaha C50 Pre Amp

for my HK AVR. I know nothing about these amps. I told him I was leaning towards tube amps and he agreed they sounded great but were high maintenance; i.e. having to replace tubes every 6 to 12 months. He has offered to bring them when he comes so that I can demo them.

I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff so expert advice is quite welcome.

    Thanks again.

Pass on the Yamaha stuff................very mediocre and that's kinda putting it nicely. :)

With proper tubes and biasing, there is very little maintenance. 6-12 mos for replacements............not likely. Perhaps for power tubes every 2-3 years or more.

I saw that Anthem yesterday and thought about pulling the trigger for a spare as I like the Anthem AMP 1 that much. Thats a very good price. A paid a bit more but had upgraded caps and resisters and some nice extra tubes.

As George and others have said, mated with SDA 1Cs you will be happy for a long time.

You will have a lot of improvements you can make that are simple and relatively cheap and will take you system up several notches.

    Just to name a few:
    RDO-194 tweets
    XO cap and resister upgrades
    Dynamat the baskets
    Sylvania 5751 3mica blackplate
    Mullard CV4003

Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)
Preamp: Joule Electra LA-150 MKII SE

Just working out a time with the wife to go up and grab them. I'm hoping tomorrow evening.

Still will need to grab a pre for this. Right now on the forum there is the Adcom GTP-400 for $100. I'm torn about whether or not to go all tube at this point or just get something working. Suggestions?

Man,, you are not wasting time,, reminds me of the chicken and pig scenario,, the chicken is dedicated,,while the pig is committed,, so,, which are you? If it were me,, knowing what I do now,, after many errors,,I would go the way of the pig,,and get a tubed pre,, here's one for starters,, just make sure that if you go this way,,that the pre does not "phase invert",,do you currently have something to drive the Anthem with?

Well, I feel like more like a pig since I'm now officially in the category of pork-barrel spending when it comes to my original budget. :p While that could be interpreted a number of ways I know, it does NOT mean that I am wasting money on a phony project drummed up to boost my voting base.

I'm not sure I understand your question regarding 'do you currently have something to drive the Anthem with?" Do you mean do I have any kind of pre-amp or AVR to act as a pre at this point? If so, the answer is 'No' I have nothing to drive it with.

Whoa! $1,000 for a pre?! Way out of my range for now. Looking for something that'll sound good but I probably need to go the way of the chicken unless I can do something less expensive.

The Belles is worth every penny. It gives up absolutely nothing being tubed. If I could get one I certainly would, and it would stay with me a long time with me not having any envy of any other gear.

Once I get a few other items sold, I should have around $815 absolute guaranteed play money (without further household budget approval). That is not quite enough to get the Anthem (already bought at $490 out the door) and the ~$450 into the SDA 1C's. That puts me at just over $940 so far.

It sounds lame but I'd actually considered sticking with the HK AVR as a pre but the opportunity to sell presented itself and I took the cash to put towards the new venture.

I will think on the $$'s for the pre. I figure a few hundred to get started. I know it's not what the pig would do but I just can't pull $1000 away from the household for now.

I hear ya. There will be more. I feel strongly about the pre being one of the most important pieces of gear in the system aside from speakers. I'd run the HK till you can get a serious pre.

The HK is gone. Sold today. I hear you on the pre. The Anthem amp seemed like a really good buy which is why I went ahead and sprung for it. I really didn't get into this expecting to dive in as deep as I have already. I was at $550 for a pair of LSi9's and a GFA5500 to drive them originally. I guess I will have to go for an affordable pre and then look forward to an amazing upgrade down the road a bit. I'd hate to have the SDA's and the Anthem sitting here just waiting for a pre......

I can slow down a bit. No money designated for the pre anyway.

How does a person upgrade caps? I have no soldering experience and would be hesitant to 'learn' on any nice equipment.

What is great about this forum is that there are so many that have the reference knowledge. In other words, I would probably hear the SDA's as an SDA virgin and think WOW! those sound great. I don't have any other reference to know what replacing tweeters or x-overs or caps will do so for that reason, I look at this as a phased approach. Just get the equipment, then look at upgrades and that goes for the pre as well as the other items you mentioned. At the same time, I can appreciate the waiting for the right pre to come along and can handle that. It's not as though I am completely without speakers to listen to music on.

Thanks again so much for all of your advice. It is greatly appreciated and I'm sure my ears will appreciate it too once I get everything hooked up.

I'm currently planning to use a pair of Signal Cable Analog II's between the CDP and the pre. Any heartburn there? No cables identified yet for going between the pre and the power amp. All I have in the bucket are Monster cables.

Thanks! (and I mean that both sarcastically and sincerely) This really is a lot of fun. I never in a million years dreamed I would put together a 2-channel rig but no matter how much the home theater has improved in the last 2 years, it just never sounds quite right for 2-channel listening. Can't wait to hear what I've been missing.

DPowell, just FYI.....do not ever power on the Anthem without it being hooked up to a load. If you do, bad juju will happen. Good luck with the speakers and congrat's on the amp purchase.

Between all of us here, we will find you a pre to do your rig justice. You are well on your way to assembling a really nice rig. Good on ya'!
