Not that anyone noticed or that I made a big deal about it, but I took my first international trip ever the past few weeks to South Africa.

Amazing area of the world to say the least. Spend a little over a week in Hoedspruit, a week in Cape Town and a few days intermingled in there in Johannesburg.

Saw all of the Big 5 in the wild except a leopard, but to make up for it we saw cheetahs close up and wild dogs in the wild, which are super rare these days.

Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and Franschoek were awesome too.

Yeah, the zebra pic worked out quite well. My dad just missed the same shot.

I would imagine a trip to Africa as one of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children was just a little different than mine. Thanks for making it though.

Here's the view from my room in Cape Town and me at Chapman's Peak, which had just re-opened after being closed for a few years for safety reasons.

    Bill,

We had great weather overall, the whole trip. It did get over 100 a couple of days in Hoedspruit and Cape Town was a bit San Fransisco-ish at times. Nothing too extreme that I wasn't used to, luckily.

We did have some rain driving up to Hoedspruit, but that was pretty much it. At Cape Town, we had one of the clearest days my sister's husband's uncle could ever remember seeing when we went to Table Rock.

Also, for those wanting more pictures, my Table Rock, Robin Island, Stellenbosch, and Franschoek pictures got corrupted somehow when I transferred them over, but my sister has copies and they should be coming soon.

I know South Africa isn't usually on people's list of places to visit in Africa, but I can't recommend it enough. Between the wildlife, coastal and wine regions, there's something to please everybody, and unlike some countries, you can drink the tap water! :D (it just may not taste good, like Tucson's)

Great pics, looks, and sounds like you all enjoyed the trip. Nothing worse than planning and making a big vacation trip and being let down.

What kind of zoom do you have on your camera? The elephant and the cape buffalo look to be as close as I would want to be in the wild, with out a big bore rifle very close by!

Thanks. Definitely not a disappointing trip!

I have a Panny Lumix ZR1. It has the same sensor as the very well regarded ZS1, but it is the size of a deck of cards and has an 8x optical zoon vs. the 12x of the ZS1.
