Guys,
I have a novice bidding question, when the bidding has the characteristic of "private auction -- bidders' identities protected ", what exactly it means? Is this an open invitation to Caveat Emptor" part of the bidding process? Anybody had any experience with this type of bidding? thanks all!
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I dont think it means anything about the seller, I suppose he just chose it to protect the identity of his buyers. Are you looking at expensive stuff? I could see in a scenario where someone was buying a Ferrari, another person could see this bidders email and know where the Ferrari was delivered, etc..

It is actually an online etailer: Downtown Audio...I am curious why they even bothered with private auction, if they also give out toll free number. Anybody has any experience dealing with this outfit? thx..
It is relatively expensive stuff ($2k +)...

Downtown audio has nothing to hide. The private is for the people bidding. Its the same principle as if you went into your local hi-fi store and asked for a list of everyone who had bought over 2 thousand dollars worth of gear, the hi-fi shop wouldnt give it to you, and Downtown Audio is trying to prevent you from finding out by making the auction private

I avoid those private auctions, just not kosher. I'm not familiar with that outfit, but if you can pay with a credit card or escrow, it's probably alright. Are you able to check their feedback?

Cool. Ask alot of questions, like return policy, new or factory seconds, etc. If you end up buying from them, post the results here, so we'll know for future reference.

The reason why people do private auctions, is so other sellers with the "same" type item can't e-mail his customers and try and sell it lower or coherse his bidders to another auction of his own... Long as the sellers feedback isn't private then your fine, that would usually be for bad feedback reasons why they would hide their own feedback.... It's safe to bid, that seller just doesn't want people stealing his bidders
