Seems to me most of you guys with seperate 2 channel systems are constantly changeing out gear, looking for better, that elusive 2%.
That extra 2% you keep looking for....will always be there no matter what.Comes a time when you have to chill and just enjoy the music instead of chaseing your tail for that extra 2% that you never will find.
Constantly trading out gear doesn't necessarily mean someone is chasing the elusive 2%. Remember -- this is a hobby. Some people just like to try something new, and there's lots of adventure and fun in doing that.
BTW, I found my 2%.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Yes,it's a hobby, but you don't change out gear with the hope of the sound quality getting worse,do ya? You always hope for a tad more improvement in SQ.Or you change out gear for features that may more suit your needs.Either way, their is always something bigger, better, badder, out their.Question is...is this a hobby of gear,or music,or a combination of both ? Maybe a slight combo of both to me with the end result being the enjoyment of the music.Once you are able to just sit your **** down and enjoy it,your done for awhile.HT SYSTEM-

I kinda figured that was one of the problems. I would have had a problem with it as well. You let go of some seriously NICE gear before it hardly had time to get broken in to get something even more expensive but not necessarily better.
As I've said before, extremes of anything is bad including this type of behavior. Now if you are single & have no one else to think about, knock yourself out.
But if you are in a relationship, unless you are rich, live in a 20 room mansion, and are all caught up on your expenses, then reason needs to be used. Otherwise, you're just one purchase away from disaster in your relationship.
Sounds like you learned it the hard way Darla, but you'll know better the next time around & you be able to balance everything a lot better.:)wingnut4772 wrote: »My obsession with having the latest and the greatest cost me some serious problems in my previous relationship. I have two completely different rigs. They were each designed with certain goals in mind. My HT rig has an AVR as the main control center, a very good DVD player and a separate CDP changer that will play SACD if I choose to. The speakers tend to be on the detailed side of the spectrum which is what I want in a HT. My sub, while not the ultimate in reproducing LFE, suits my tastes.
On the other hand, my 2 channel rig is separates, with a goal of providing a more laid back sound with an increased emphasis on soundstage and imaging. It consists of a pre, amp, a couple of very good SACD/CDPs and a TT. I have different pieces that I can move in and out (and I do occasionally) - ie: a SS pre vs a tube pre...or a vintage TT vs a more current TT - different speakers - different CDPs. I haven't added anything new to the mix of this rig in over 2 years.
My HT rig, while it is a very capable 2 channel music system, sounds very different from my stereo system. Neither one is the "latest, greatest" in gear...but they were designed by me to be different and do specific things well. I think I have done that.

Something similar happened to me last year. My second attempt at HT was MUCH better than the first. When everything was set up and done, I spent several weeks listening to music on the HT and not my 2ch system. It was sounding really good and it seemed like I didn't care as much for my 2ch music anymore. The music was there and it sounded great. After a few weeks, I listened to my 2ch set up and was totally blown away.
I looked back to see what was going on and found out that during my HT music days, I was more into the tunes at the time than audio.
Now I feel that when it comes to 2ch, we NEED breaks once in a while. Not one or two days, but maybe weeks at a time. 2ch can drive people mad. It's a cycle for me, 2ch, HT, video games. But 2ch is there 95% of the time. I just stopped forcing myself to listen when not really in the mood. -
My second attempt at HT was far better than my first, the Reel Time Theater movie experience is so good it makes me appreciate my 2-Channel music listening experience all the more, each one so different yet each is very involving with its given media.

Same here. Sometimes I just chilll and listen on the HT gear. But I have to say, there were times when I cheated. When heavily under the influence, sometimes I would I listen to music in some funky surround mode just for fun:D.
