I wish Hollywood would dump all the "big name" actors and go with "no names" for all the films, makes the movie going experience so much better. No Tom Hanks, not Brad Pitt...and so on.

I don't care who the actor is as long as they do a good job. However it seems to me that they became a "big name" for a reason...ie: they are good actors who perform very well. I can understand that some of the BNs will start to "mail it in" after a while and maybe that is what you are referring to...but there are many actors that take great pride in their work and always strive for the the best in every role. I think there are some actors where is can be said their last works were some of their best.

I think Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt fall in the category of always working to better their craft...but even then sometimes they just aren't that good in a particular role. I still enjoy watching them.

For me, a big name actor is a distraction, no matter how good they are. Just seeing them on the screen is a distraction, because no matter how good they are I'm still seeing the Pitt's and Hanks on the screen.

Yes...and no name doesn't necessarily mean talent either. In fact, it usually doesn't. That's why I said when it works....it works really well. I love nothing more than a great performance from someone I have never heard of before.

All of the famous actors and actresses started out as nobodies.

Anyways, I loved District 9 and thought Sharlto Copley did a great job. Can't wait to see how he pulls of the role of Murdock in the new A-Team movie. :)

I hate the over saturation of any actor/actress.. and some of them make to many damn movies... never been a fan of Brad Pitt... i've only see a few of his movies... the only one I half way liked was Mr and Mrs Smith.

One of my fave actors is Daniel Day Lewis.. he's good.. but yet he isn't over saturated in making three or four movies a year like some other actors do. Will Ferrell = way over saturated.

Daniel Day-Lewis is probably my favorite actor. With all due respect to Sean Penn, Day-Lewis is probably the best method actor in Hollywood. That's why you never feel like you're watching him, so much as watching one of his many diverse characters.

Just got this from netflix and watched it last night. Parts were gory and disturbing but overall I thought it was brilliant. Mixing the cinematic and the documentary was very well done. Not the typical alien invasion that we've seen a million times and the gritty quality made it more real somehow. Alien technology was cool too (although somewhat derivative of a few computer games).

Viewed it in HD on the Movie Network. Good film, sound was bang on. Accents were very understandable to me.

Just watched this on Netflix as well. I enjoyed it, and honestly thought the accents added to the overall appeal. Certainly wasn't what I expected going in, as I hadn't heard anything about this film at all. Well done across the board with this one.

Watched this last night via netflix streaming. I liked it. I though that it was a different take on the old alien movies. I like how they left it open but did not make it where a squeal was expected. i hope it never gets a sequel honestly.

I really don't think this is the kind of movie that will EVER get a sequel. Just some food for thought... this film only took $30 million to make. In contrast, Robin Hood took $200 million. Some movies are meant to be possible franchises where more often than not, merchandising comes first and art comes second.

Good luck finding where the extra $170 mil went to with Robin Hood.

That's easy. $20 million alone went to Russel Crowe's salary, not including all of the other costs to cater to him and his entourage. Cate Blanchett probably didn't come cheap. District-9 didn't have to pay salaries like that.

True. However, I suspect a fairly large portion simply went to promotion. Without which, a movie like Robin Hood would never have a chance at garnering even a fraction of the word of mouth District 9 generated.

The marketing budget is a separate element that isn't included in the reporting of a film's budget.

Regardless, I agree there's not going to be a D-9 sequel.

I thought that might be the case, but never really had pursued a proper answer.
Eeesh... that makes some of these "budgets" seem even more outlandish.
Try to hazard a guess how much went into promoting Avatar?
