Upsampling CDPs: analog vs digital 'rates'

Alot of CDPs have DACs rated at different rates: 24bit/192Khz, 24bit/384Khz, and of course, some still have DACs that sample at the standard 'redbook' rates of 16bit/44Khz.
So, the analog outputs are based on the DACs 'upsampling' (via a DSP doing interpolation of the standard redbook encoding on the actual CD).
My question is, if you use the CDP digital outputs (coax or toslink), is the data rate output at the redbook standard at 44Khz or at the interpolated upsampled rate, or is the 'selectable' in certain CDPs?
This has to do with connecting a CDP to an AVR.
If the AVR does not support a very high interpolated rate - say the CDP upsamples to 384kHz, then is the digital rate not accepted by the AVR?
That's why I tend to think that at the digital outputs of a CDP, the rates are standard redbook.
