Pretty much, if I can see through it, I won't like it. If it's less then 6% abv, I most likely will not like it. If it's mass brewed (Bud, Coors, Sierra Nevada, MGD types) I won't like it.

I'm really picky and only go for strong, micro-brews.

You dare to mention Sierra Nevada amongst those putrid products? May the fleas of a thousand dead camels infest your pubes.

Corona - horse piss in a bottle
Heiniken - also rather foul. However, when I was in Ireland recently, I had a Heiniken draft (very small pub with very few draft beers) and it was actually good. Heiniken has a brewery in Ireland and it is entirely different than the bottled crap we get here.

While in college I was a beer snob, always trying the micro brew type stuff. This was ten years ago when the micro brewers were starting their comeback. There were so many very bad beers. I would say 75% or more were just terrible and far to many to either list or recall.

I can second this. Being in college and on a microbrew trip, I've tried 200 different micros over the last 8 months. And at least half of them were highly mediocre to bad. However, the worst beer I've had, though not a micro, was Leinenkugel Berry Weiss. Considering the Sunset Wheat is so tasty, Berry Weiss is the most disgusting beer ever created.

Some of my recent favorites are Avery The Reverand, Unibroue Trois Pistoles, Karmeliet Tripel. All highly recommended if you like Belgiuns.

    Heineken sucks big time.

I never liked Heineken in the USA. You have to try it in Europe. I had it when I was in Holland and it is a completely different and respectable brew.

Good catch. Somebody was just putting words to the page without knowing what they are saying. Sierra Nevada Porter and Stout, along with Pale Ale, are pretty good. Recently, I have been drinking their ESB (Early Spring Beer), and it also rates Muy Bien.

Anyone else had Guinness in Ireland? I always hated Guinness, but everyone said to give a try- "the closer you get to the factory, the better it is"... Which is completely true- terrific in Dublin, so-so in Galway. Which is about 4 hours drive from Dublin; so that explains why it tastes like it does in the US.

Not to cause a big arguement, but the beer in Ireland is the same beer that we get in the US.

Beer Myth: The Guinness they serve in Ireland is better

It seems widely accepted that beer in "the old country" is better than what they export to the rest of the world. The brewing process is cheap, so why would a brewery risk their reputation by brewing a different beer for export? It doesn't make sense, and it's not true. With few exceptions, the beer that is exported is the exact same beer that they serve in the bar across the street from the brewery. The difference is purely freshness. It takes two weeks for a keg of Guinness to get from Dublin to your favorite bar in the states.

don't you guys know... Beer doesn't matter. They all taste the same and any of you who buy expensive beer are all just wasting your money to make you feel better because they all taste the same. Hops are Hops. You can't change the way they taste. I challenge anybody to a double blind test.

So if a hop is a hop then the type of hop,the alpha acid and the IBU's is completely irrelevant I guess....

    True dat...

But freshness is what good beer is all about.

Unlike some wine (like a Bordeaux or Burgundy), beer is meant to be served fresh.

Heat and light -and age, can kill an otherwise good beer.

And those green bottles are known to be the root cause of that taste referred to as 'skunk beer'.

That is why, imho, if given a choice between draft and bottle, I will pick draft as the odds are better that the beer is fresher and not subjected to light.

I've had Guiness from cans with the silly CO2 ball and from bottles - neither taste good, imo. And I've had it draft - but, to me, it still doesn't taste 'right'.

One of the things on my 'to do list' is to have Guiness from the well spring source itself in Ireland.

I will reserve final judgement until then... :p

Freshness is dependent on the style of beer. A Really hoppy IPA you want to drink fresh but a high ABV RIS can actually improve over time. Not being able to age a beer is another myth. There are hundreds of beers out there that can be aged and get better with age. I have 12 beers in my wine cellar as we speak actually. Some I plan to age for another 3 years.

    In my wine Cellar:
    (1) 2008 Stone Vertical Epics (8.6%)
    (1) 2008 Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout (9.2%)
    (1) 2008 Deschutes Black Butte XX (11%)
    (1) 2007 Deschutes Abyss (11%)
    (1) 2008 Deschutes Abyss (11%)
    (1) Full Sail Top Sail Imperial Porter - Bourbon Barrel Aged (Brewmaster Reserve 2008) (9.85%)
    (1) Full Sail Black Gold Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel Aged (Brewmaster Reserve 2009) (10.5%)
    (1) 2007 DFH World Wide Stout (18%)
    (1) 2008 DFH World Wide Stout (18%)
    (1) 2009 Lost Abbey Serpent Stout (11%)
    (1) 2008 Stone Russian Imperial Stout (10.8%)
    (1) 2008 Pike Entire Wood Aged Stout (The Pike XXXXXX 9.5%)
    (2) 2008 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout (13%)

Granted there are exceptions...there are always exceptions.

My expectations of a "good beer" are tempered by time, location, and source:
somewhat like comparing the taste of a freshly caught lobster in Maine vs what you would expect in say Montana where it may take a day, or more to get it there....frozen then thawed....don't expect too much if your situation does not situate yourself for optimal enjoyment.

"In general" - I will shy away from a beer that has gathered dust on a shelf.

Did that once with a beer from a store while on vacation....was in a hurry, forgot to check for condition, shelf age, etc.

Got it back to the hotel and noticed the bottom of the carton was stained, the bottles were dusty and the beer was stale and tasted old and nasty.

Same can happen for imported beers, or even domestics.

I really do enjoy Stone Brewery's concoctions - just up the road by 20 minutes! :D

Deschutes is another brewery I like as well.

    Nice selection you got there...

Beers that got dust on a shelf are usually exsposed to temp changes, etc so they will go bad, just like a wine. Properly kept beers can last a long time though.

But I hear you what you're saying. The great thing about beer is there is a style out there for everyone and not everyone will agree on what they think "Tastes" good. To each there own.

I was down in the Escondido area in 2005 before I really started getting into craft beers so I didn't hit up Stone. I want to plan a trip back just to specifically hit all the breweries down there now. I'd love to pick up a Stone growler as well.
