Going to sell these monitor 12's, buy a cheap surround sound setup and realize i am never going to have the money to buy an amp big enough to drive these beasts.(no use having a 400 watt speaker and driving it with a 50 watts amp) I have been doing a lot of Craigs listing and ebaying with no luck of finding a decent cheap amp on a poor mans' budget. I thought about stacking these speakers up in the attic and giving it some more time, but i just don't have it in me anymore to re-live dissapointment over and over again. Sometimes a man just needs to know when he's been beat. I will say it's been great coming here and reading all that you all post and enjoy the company. Just time to get real and leave the real music up to people who got the money!

For the price of a cheap surround you could buy a very decent AMP. I ran my M12s with my Denon AVR (110wpc).
Moving up to a Carver TFM-25 gave me more headroom but the Denon was fine.Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)

I agree. Look in Audiogon.com too I think you'll have better sound with a good used amp than you'll have with a cheap surround system(although I'm guessing since I haven't heard any of the latter). What's your budget?Yep, my name really is Bob.

M Mooch,
Hey don't let those speakers go? You can get a decent used amp for 300-500. I got mine for 300 from audiogon..worth EVERY PENNY. And you can't even get a HTIB for that? Best purchase I've made of late. Using my Denon AVR (now, as pre/pro) which was fine in itself but this is a whole other level of 2 channel sound.
Hang in there and give some of those sites a chance! Hate to see a good pair of speakers lose their home?

You can get Adcom's all day for $200-350 depending on model. Plenty of power in a GFA545 to power your 12's.

Hey Man,, don't be so hard on yourself. I have found that (if you are like most of us) you cannot just "jump" into this hobby and "poof" now you have a reference system. It takes years of trial and error(for me), build your system slowly, piece by piece, and when you have synergy, and the sound that you are looking/listening for,,then enjoy,,sometimes it escapes me,, but this is supposed to be FUN,, be patient, you'll get there,, try a tube amp, might surprise you. Good luck, have fun on your journey.;)JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

dude, i ran a pair of sda srs as well as a pair of sda srs 1.2tl's for a matter of months on an h/k RECEIVER. sure, it put out pretty clean 100wpc, but that minute amount of power still had them singin'!!! i'm with the others. keep the speakers and get an amp later down the road. a little patience now will be better than kicking your own **** later.

Hell purchase a cheap $100.00 or less Proton or NAD amp or int amp most if not all of these are hidden treasure sure they may say it's 40 watts but I gurantee you it's the loudest 40 watts you have ever heard if you were nearby I would give you one to take home.
Here are a few completed listings these are both 40 watts per channel one is an int amp the other a receiver and they both use dual transformers, sanken output transistors, nichicon caps all high quality parts usally found in much more expensive amps. Either one of these will play your polks plenty loud until you can find something better trust me I know.

If I was forced between chosing a crappy amp w/great speakers or a great amp w/crappy speakers, the crappy amp/great speaker combo wins every time. It will still sound good and I just have to remember not crank the amp up all the way. A geat amp will always sound poor with crappy speakers.

What sort of 50 wpc amp have you got?
I can relate.
Untill late last year i had alway driven my 12's with the 70 wpc Luxman amp i bought with thw 12's 20 years ago. I have updated to a Bel Canto 150 wpc now and while it is better i lived with the Luxman for a long time. But i always wondered what more power (and better power) would sound like.
I tried a couple of new amps inlcuding a more powerfull Rotel RB1080 (200 wpc) but liked the sound of the Bel Canto better.
I know your budget is tight but untill you try another amp how do you know that what you have is not good enough?
I can tell you from experience that you will regret loosing them later if you dont do some more research now. Do you have a friend you can borrow an amp from to see how it changes things?
Just an idea.2 Channel
Amp - Jas Audio Bravo 3.2 set
Power Cord - Tunami GPX

Hey folks, thanks for all the kind words and advice. I don't want to sound to bleak, but times are tight and money is short. Trying to raise two kids on one income these days is futile. I lucked into these speakers and do enjoy the sound that they produce even from a small amp, but this hobby can be trying when money is tight and there is no room in my future for a better amp (kids come first). I should just enjoy them with the watts i have, but these speaker beg for more and i don't want to keep wasting money on tweeters and soon these woofers won't take the abuse from a cheap amp. My thought was to sell these to create income to buy a home theater setup (kids love movie, not my music lol) I guess it's just a thought...
Peace

Where in Pa are you East or West? I have a AVR or two around I could probably deliver to you in person for almost nothing, perhaps even 'nothing'? Will be down in the Lehigh Valley area end of May?

I think you should consider cnh's generous offer, or at least explore it. Putting your kids first is the right thing to do after you explore all your options. Let me share something with you that can give you a glimmer of hope bro'. Hang with it and if you have patience, good things will come. Just don't give up completely on what you find enjoyment in. This past weekend, I was reminded once again of something that I have witnessed/heard many times throughout my audio journey.
I walked into a high end shop and demo'd some systems. Too keep it short and sweet, I'll narrow it down to two rigs. One rig was close to [or over] $100,000.00. The other rig probably didn't top $1,500 retail.
The 100K rig? Eh, you would have to pay me to listen to it. Oh man, was it horrid. The smaller rig? Hey now, I enjoyed that one. Very pleasing sounds that made you want to listen to the music. My point? You don't need to blow mega bucks to get great sound. Sounds like all you need is some amplification and cnh has offered a solution for you. My advice? Take him up on his most generous offer and stick with it. If you give up now, you will just have to start from scratch when the itch to enjoy what you like hits again.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~ -
Offer still stands...one option is a 2-3 year old Yamaha 90 Watts x 6 channel, no HDMIs but a nice surround receiver--original box, remote, manual etc. Think about it. Will give you surround all you need is a Polk Home theater speaker package with sub and you've got your 5.1...or you could get a cheap sub, use the Monitors up front find some used surrounds and a center. Receiver in excellent condition...used maybe 2 months? Willing to let it go for free. You can't do better than that.

Cnh, thanks for the offer, but I wouldn't feel right taking you up on it...It's nice to see there are still some good people out there.
And thanks for all the advice from everybody.
I have decided to keep them for now and have some patience, wait and see what the future brings. Like HillBilly stated before, it's better to have good speakers and a crappy amp.
I guess i was doing a slight Rant about speakers being rated so high and most amps won't even cover the range. But i should just be happy that i was blessed with the beasts, cause they did bring a lot of musical enjoyment back into my life that was missing for years. I will from now, keep the volume lower and enjoy the sound, not the feel
Like i said before, thanks folks for being understanding and generous...
Peace -

Dude, I also have an AVR I'm willing to give to you. It's not that uncommon and it makes the persons giving feel right/good. It's about Karma. What comes around goes around.

Glad to hear you keeping them. The AVR's are offer with no string attached. Just brothers helping brother. Plus, giving you unused gear to someone who could use it is cool.engtaz
I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
I also am happy to hear you're keeping them.
I'd venture to guess probably half of us at one time or another have been exactly where you are. I know I have had to let a nice system go worried about the bills when the kids were young. Heck, a couple of years ago I did the same thing when things got tight.
Recently one of my neighbors had an accident and was hurt pretty bad. She's always been a good neighbor but a loner and we didn't talk or speak much at all. She made the comment that I played some pretty good music and enjoyed hearing it. I asked her what she listened to and she told me she didn't have anything to listen to music on.
Well, I've got so much unused gear around gathering dust and in the way I put her together a small system consisting of a Denon integrated 60wpc, Yamaha tuner, Magnavox CD player, and average pair of old Utah 12" 3 way speakers. The value of them combined might have been $100 but when I hooked everything up she started crying and I started crying then and I can tell you it's the best I've felt in a long time helping someone out.
If someone wants to be nice let them. You might be surprised how nice a gift it can be for everyone. One day when things are different you'll remember a kind gesture and be able to do the same.
We're all together on this small planet. Live a good life and good things happen.
Harry
