How to set crossover on a sub that doesn't have #s

Gang,
I'm preparing to buy a set of Polk 5.0 speakers (I just posted another thread about it). I have an Energy S10.2 sub. I have no idea whether it's considered a decent sub or not--I got it for a good price as a demo model. I can't afford to toss it out in favor of a Polk sub right now, so I'll need to make use of it with the new system.

However, one of the things I never figured out is how to set the cross-over on it, because the dial has no numbers on it. The manual says it ranges from 50-100 Hz, and has some instructions for setting it by ear, which I was never confident about. Should I just set to about an 80 Hz point, which presumably would be just over halfway around the dial? Is there a more objective way to set it up? Do the modern self-calibrating receivers have any means of helping to set up a sub-woofer?

thanks!

You could get a dB meter from RatShack & run a sine wave sweep....

what amp/receiver you running this with? Most receivers you set the xo on the receiver side that way the amp will send to the right channels.

Sorry for the delayed reply--I must have missed the notification when you posted this.

I have a Yamaha RX-V663--just got it out of the box and am awaiting the rest of my speakers before setting it up.

If that receiver is capable of this, then should I just turn the crossover dial on the sub all the way up to the highest setting so it will pass through all signals from the receiver?

I have the 663, which upon initial setup, will take you through the Sub-management feature. I currently have my Subs crossover buried at 120hz and the receiver at 80hz. I dont have a great Sub either, but this setup seems to be working ok. Does take some tweaking.

I have this sub as well, on the back of the sub you should have two inputs, one which uses the Sub's Xover and the other which uses the receivers. I use the receiver one that way I can set the Xover. Hope this helps. As far as it being a decent sub, it does a good job is it the best? NO is it crap? NO you, we have a decent to good sub, it'll get the job done! I want to upgrade, but I have also had this sub for about 3yrs now.

Koo, it's been so long since I've looked at it, I completely forgot that it had the 2nd input.

However! I got the rest of my speakers delivered today and *surprise!* there was a PSW10 included, which I was not expecting. I completely forgot about the bundle promotion! I ordered a full RTi set through Amazon, and even though some came from Crutchfield and some from Amazon, they automatically threw in the sub :D

So, that said, would you use the PSW10 over the Energy S10.2? The Energy weighs considerably more, which might mean thicker cabinet or beefier amp (both presumably good). But on the down side, I've had that sub for 7 or 8 years now and it's already had to be repaired once (something electronic), so it's got some miles on it.

Opinions? Stick with the Energy? Go with the Polk? Or sell both and upgrade to a DSW series sub? (incidentally, I live in a condo and can't run a lot of bass, so whatever I use is going to have little strain on it)

    TIA!

What RTi sets did you get?
I'm thinking that if you have the money and the old sub has given you problems then you might want to buy a sub that suites your new rig. I'm thinking REALLY loudly that the little 10 sub is great for an ambience system in the office but ain't worth a hoot with pretty much any of the RTi line. No **** for the pop.

Thanks gang, looks like I'm going to stick with my ol' sub and find a new home for the PSW10 :)
