So just wonderin' what paths y'all have found to an affordable collection?

Been seeing some "not-so-good" references to Columbia House in a couple threads (I have had some issues with them as well).

Know about Amazon obviously, but they're not always lowest price. BlockBuster’s in-store selections are hit and miss, and again not always a bargain for "Pre-Viewed". Is their web site any good?

Did just happen upon a Wal-Mart display last night. Picked-up letterbox, DD releases of "The Great Escape" and "The Big Chill" for $10, and "Murder in the First" for $8. Decent source, I think, but too happenstance to build a collection.
More later,
Tour...

I use cnl.com for some of the more obscure stuff that you won't find at walmart, ect. It's a canadian site but they ship to the US. Some of my American friends tell me they have good prices for the foreign fliks and such. Pretty good selection for anime also.

I don't ever buy them from online because after you add in shipping, most of the time you can get it for cheaper, or the same price as you can get them as a first week release. I get all of my dvd's from Best Buy or Fry's Electronics (which I truly despise, but they have the selection).

I buy most of my DVD's at Best Buy. They seem to have the best prices in my area. When a new release comes out the price is usually at its best, then goes up about $5 about 2 weeks after being released.

BUT, one thing that totally pisses me off about Best Buy is that when you enter the store, there is always one or two guys there to greet you at the door as if you are their best friend, then when you leave the store (whether you purchased something or not) they usually ask to verify your receipt on the item purchased, or, if you bought nothing, look at you like you might be ripping them off, and want to put you up against the wall and pat you down. Ok, maybe a little exaggeration here, but some of you might know what I mean.

Anybody out there feel the same way?

Columbia House averages out to good prices.. just remember those cheap "free" ones when you're writing the big fat checks later. I just ordered Saving Private Ryan and Jesus Christ Superstar, and with 40% off one of them, plus shipping, I'll be writing a check for about $48... but... got those 5 or 6 or however many it was at the start. I think it averages out to about $10 a DVD or something like that, which isn't bad considering you can choose from anything they carry. With this purchase, we're done with them and getting out. Tired of the automatic mailings.

The problem I've had with CH is customer service. I've waited MONTHS for them to send me a return shipping label, and they don't have a "no automatic shipment" option. We've had to call them twice about late fees for DVDs we didn't buy and wanted to return ....

Around here, WalMart is the best price if they have what you want. They used to have a bunch of movies for like $9.44, then I noticed they went up to $14.44, now the prices seem to vary. They consistenly have some for $5, which is great if it happens to be movies you want (wife wanted Creepshow.. $5)
Target isn't the best price, but they've surprised me with selection... I'd looked high and low for Life of Brian, gave up, and one day there is sat.. one copy.. on Target's shelf... and only $10.

    Used CD stores often have
used DVD’s. I find new stuff, rare stuff and titles that are out of print. Usually at the lowest prices. I use them on the road and send them back to the islands.

"At the first bend, I had the clear sensation that Tazio had taken it badly and that we would end up in the ditch; I felt myself stiffen as I waited for the crunch. Instead, we found ourselves on the next straight with the car in a perfect position. I looked at him, his rugged face was calm, just as it always was, and certainly not the face of someone who had just escaped a hair-raising spin. I had the same sensation at the second bend. By the fourth or fifth bend I began to understand; in the meantime, I had noticed that through the entire bend Tazio did not lift his foot from the accelerator, and that, in fact, it was flat on the floor. As bend followed bend, I discovered his secret. Nuvolari entered the bend somewhat earlier than my driver's instinct would have told me to. But he went into the bend in an unusual way: with one movement he aimed the nose of the car at the inside edge, just where the curve itself started. His foot was flat down, and he had obviously changed down to the right gear before going through this fearsome rigmarole. In this way he put the car into a four-wheel drift, making the most of the thrust of the centrifugal force and keeping it on the road with the traction of the driving wheels. Throughout the bend the car shaved the inside edge, and when the bend turned into the straight the car was in the normal position for accelerating down it, with no need for any corrections."

The quote is from SNL where they were doing a Hardball skit and the host (Chris something i think?) was interviewing these people and they were just bashing on anything they could.......that was his response.....i just liked it. The ***king of edits*** is because I seem to always need to reword or type what I've just posted. Just an observation that a lot of my posts seem to be edited (like this one).

When asked by Matthews (played by comic Darrell Hammond) how to make the country feel safe again, McCain as Ashcroft stated:

"Chris, security starts with vigilance. As Americans we will never truly be free until each and every one of us is afraid of being thrown into jail. But thanks to the TIPS program, we've been able to detain tens of thousands of potential American terrorists for months at a time for little or no reason, just like the Founding Fathers dreamed. ... We've got some really great stuff in the works. There's one plan that would make the Arabic language – or anything that sounds like it – illegal."

The roundtable also featured an appearance by singer Harry Belafonte (portrayed by Tracy Morgan), who last week had likened Secretary of State Colin Powell to a plantation slave who is "serving his master well."

"Chris, I'm gonna say something that a lot of people are afraid to say," proclaimed Belafonte. "Osama bin Laden is a 'Uncle Tom.'"

"Good God!" shouted Matthews. "I can't even figure out who that's offensive to."

Previously, "Belafonte" had said "The poodle is the black man of the dog world."

Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Circuit City.. in the store.. not online.
I used to do the online buying thing.. but once shipping is added.. plus if it was one I really wanted to see the day of release.. often times I would get it on Fri or Sat instead of going down to BB and pick it up in person. So I no longer buy online DVD, CD's, or DVD-audio

    8.1 % tax vs $2 to $4 for shipping

*If i order online from Amazon.com i pay taxes + shipping. sucks huh? :supermad:

Columbia House avg 7-8/disc even cheaper if you're not charged sales tax :)

They've lowered prices so no more sucky titles needed to buy for fullfillment titles.

    DLEW308,

I do want the details on that CH deal. Let us all know. I think everyone here likes deals!

Also, I really like deepdiscountdvd.com. There is no shipping and no tax. I like them. They never have super low prices, like less than $5, but they always have the cheapest price online. Well, for the most part. My only small complaint is that their shipping is a little slow. I like BB for their good deals, and their shipping is really, really fast. And free!

I'm with danger boy, WAL*MART is where I've picked up a pile of DVD's and VHS tapes. Some of my favorite movies aren't on DVD. WAL*MART has the 5 dollar movie rack for VHS and DVD's are as low as 8 bucks if they have too much stock and need to get rid of stuff for the next big release. I also get decent deals on Amazon.com but mainly because I buy too much stuff there. Same with Tower records and Sam Goody. I'm in frequent shopper clubs in both stores. I recently bought my Shoebox Full of Blues box set with all points from previous prucharses.

Oh yeah, Sumflow, I almost envy you! I've actually sat my butt down on Waimea Bay! I'd love to live down there but I'm afraid it is beyond my means and I don't think I would be able to find decent work in my field down there.

We have a local supermarket chain called Wegman's. They have a pretty decent video rental section and they often sell used DVDs (recent releases) two for $20. If you can wait a month or two after the release date, you can bag them at a decent price.

Scouring the bins at CC and BB often yields $6.99 and $8.99 for older stuff that didn't sell well.
