5jr's

Hi, I am looking at a pair of 5jr's.
The person selling them says he bought them about 8 to 10 years ago new - (Australia).
Would this be correct - my research says they where made in the mid 80's
The serial No. says 5jr 46889
I have a Quad 405 amp to power them ... are these speakers too small for this amp.
Thanks for reading.
Brett.

(recap from the OP's other thread;))
Welcome to Club Polk. The Quad 405 should be a good match for them. There are a few guys who have run them here so hopefully they pop up. If you pull one of the drivers you should have a rough idea when they were made.
BenPlease. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks
Ben -
Those are great speakers for the size and it's what I'm currently running for my computer rig. I have modded mine, so they aren't stock, but I very much enjoy them.

Are the one's you are looking at the model 5jr or 5jr+? I think I have seen discussions/pics on both, and I believe the jr were earlier models and maybe didn't have the passive (more like the old monitor 4), whereas the jr+ has the sl2000 tweets and 2 6.5" (one passive).
Then I believe there was also a jr+ series 2 that had the sl2500 tweeters.
Somebody may be able to clarify better...just what I have sorted out in my research (some from the polksda.com site). Anyway, zingo and I have the ones with the passive woofer and sl2000 tweeters. Very nice sound for the size, and sound fantastic with vintage gear. I say grab em if the price is right. -
The ones we have Cameron are the Jrs, and the two differences are listed below.
Monitor 5 Jr: SL2000 tweeter, 12uF cap
Monitor 5 Jr+: SL2500 tweeter, 13.5uF cap -

I know nothing of the cap difference, and I think I'm thinking of the 4.5 w/o the PR, but the tweeter difference has bugged me for a while.
This is what confused me. This manual indicates the 5jr+ had the sl2000: http://www.polksda.com/pdfs/MonitorReferenceManual.pdf
And this one shows a pic of ours, with sl2000, referenced as 5jr+ also: http://www.polksda.com/pdfs/MonitorReference2.pdf
And I think I read somewhere on here that the later 5jr or 5jr+ "series 2" came with the sl2500. -
Well now I'm confused Cameron. The info I stated earlier came from the schematics for each speaker. The Monitor Reference 2 states that the PR of 5Jr+ is an 8" and its impedance is 6 ohm, which then would make it a regular 5? But the Monitor Reference Manual states that the 5Jr doesn't have a PR and is 4 ohm. Yet, my speakers have the 6.6" PR like most 5Jrs, but is 4 ohm... The back of my speakers are labeled "5JR", but as we know from Polk's other speakers, that may or may not imply a sub model.

Thanks Cameron and Zingo for your help.
I think I will just grab them at $200 au.
Were they still making a version up to the year 2000 as he thinks he bought them new 8 to 10 years ago for $1700 au.

$1700 AU...that's over $1k in US? Seems a little high...doubt he paid that much.
I think the series 2 model may have lasted at least into the 90s, but not sure about 2000. I've found most people are at least 5 years off on their memory of purchases though. -

Good, now I'm not the only one!
Yes, says 8" PR, but is clearly not in the pic
That's where I found the reference to the jr w/o PR.
Mine are also marked 5JR, but I have never seen a pair marked 5JR+ either.
Stop the madness...it hurts! -
Yes the one I am looking at are Identical to the 5jr+ and yes I noticed the description is incorrect.
Prices in Australia are always quite a bit higher due to importing costs etc.
But still $1700 sounds extreme
Thanks boys, I am on my way to making him an offer.
I will keep you posted.

Got them... the Quad 405 gives them more bass than I was expecting, but still noticeably lacking on some tracks.
I have not taken out a driver to get an idea of manufacture date but will get around to it.

They are a limited bass speaker as they only drive with one 6.5" woofer. They really need a subwoofer for full range, but since I just use them for my computer, I don't care too much that I'm missing the very bottom.

As you can see from the pictures the tweeters are SL2000 and the mid range is stamped Jan 16 1997 and is a MW 6501.
I assumed that because of its age the tweeter would have been a SL2500.
Is it worth upgrading these.
I have been very impressed with these speakers (for their size) in the short time I have had them.
Are these still as good as the older vintage 5jr?

Mine are older than yours, ('91) but have the SL2500 tweeters. I'm keeping my eyes open for a second pair to upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1 but I fear finding the same model will be tough. Of course now I have to figure out how to mount pretty heavy speakers in my loft.
You can see pictures of mine here:

Mine also say Series 2 M5JR on the back but the CO board says M5JR+ so I guess I'm not sure which speakers I have (but I know I like them)!

Hi Abel,
Thanks for the pictures.
You have a good range of polk speakers.
I was quite surprised that my speakers (considering the age) had SL2000
Not sure whether it is worth upgrading them as I am pretty happy with them as they are.

Brett,
I was/am surprized with the 5jr as well. For their size and typical market value, they sound fantastic.
Many would suggest upgrading to the new RDO tweeters if you can afford it. Or, if you like to tweak, go for it. However, if you like them as is, just enjoy them. Some like the SL2000, others have a severe hatred for them.
Congrats on the find! -

Now that's just confusing... -
I don't think that MW6501 is stock. Can you check the other driver. Also a pic of the front of the tweeter would be nice.
Thanks

Ben I guess you are asking the OP, mine have MW 6502's in them. One of the driver says MW 6512 but with blue pen someone has made the 1 into a 0, both are 1991.

I was asking the OP. Most 5's came with the 6502. As for your 6512 test both drivers for ohms, and let us know what you come up with.

I have a pair of Polk M5jr+ series 2 that were made in 90'. Yeah, those weren't made 8-10 years ago.
Good luck -
My 5jr+'s don't say "+" on the back, but they are. And mine have the SL2500 tweet.
