I think my ears are bleeding. I'm now sold on new tweets.

I'm on vacation this week and it just occurred to me that I've never listened to a cd on my 1 1/2 old Oppo 981. I've been using an old Panny dvd changer hooked up analog to play cd's.

The Oppo is hooked up optically to my Pioneer vsx80txv, I dropped in Alan Parsons Project "Pyramid" And oh my god, the highs sounded like two cats fighting in an alley

I've had these speakers for over 20 yrs, and I know when I went from seperates to an HT receiver, I lost a bit, but this optically connected Oppo is not the sound I'm used to hearing out of those speakers.

I suppose the easy solution is to keep playing cd's on my old panny, but that's just not in the spirit of upgradeitis. Now to tell the wife we need new tweets.

Just PM CL35 for a low-cost fix that will also cause intense pleasure when you just think about them.

I don't know what speaks you have but upgrades can definitely improve clarity and detail which some find harsh compared to what they had before. If the harshness is coming from the lower frequencies getting passed to the tweeter then a < $3 cap can do what it's designed to do and block those lower frequencies (vocal, drums, etc) from getting passed to the tweeter and thus remove the harshness.

What's left is the smooth and silky upper frequencies that are essential for a speaker to have a large soundstage and just enough clarity and detail that you can hear the drum stick hitting the cymbol and the guitars strings actually vibrating or the reed on the sax actually vibrating or fogelberg's vocal chords actually vibrating and all those sounds resonating throughout the room instead of just dropping off like a brick hitting the floor.

If you are talking about a vintage Polk model with the sl1000 or sl2000. New tweets will help a lot. Then consider getting a better source if you still feel the upgraditis.

    Good point.

I have 10b's with that infomous sl2000, and there's no chance I'm going to drop a cap in my speakers. I've been reading the arguments for over a year now.

Unless it's part of a crossover rebuild. :p

I'd edit my first post to include my speaks, but I can't edit now

I've heard a minty pair of 10B's with RD0's and they were excellent even with "stock" x-over components. Do yourself a favor and get the RD0's. If you don't find they are an improvement you can always flip them.

Then if your handy and want to tackle a fairly straight forward electronics project go for refreshing the x-overs.

    You won't regret it.

I'm definitely going to replace the tweeters now, and I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, so I might as well do the crossovers too.

The WAF would be better on this if I wasn't spending as much money as a decent pair of SDA1's cost to just finish up building an evil black rifle right now.

I would try using the analog out from the OppO and see what you think.

sometimes you have to let your ears adjust to the new sound. I'm not saying that's going to help here but it does in some cases. A good 50 hours is a pretty good break-in period.

That's an interesting thought. I don't even know if it has 5 analog outputs for my HT. Time to dig out the manual.

CL. Trust me, break in isn't an issue with any of my gear right now.

How's 20 years; is that enough time to evaluate.
