Apparently, at the gov't office I am working at, "office politics" takes on a new meaning.

I guess I didn't suck up enough or take my boss out to lunch enough. Perhaps I should've wore a dress more to work. Maybe I should've babysat the director's kids or make doctor's appointments for them. Regardless, the people that I have trained have all been promoted to positions higher than mine. Meanwhile, I was "threatened" to NOT ask for performance reviews (so that others who don't actually do work don't look bad).

It's time to leave.

Sorry to hear that Danny. Look for another job but don't quite till you have another job. Remember when interviewing never but never talk bad about previous jobs. That is a death wish on getting a job.

    Good Luck,

At a grievance hearing today ( a co-worker), I was referred to as being a "renegade".

    :D

If getting ahead means having to kiss arse or *fill-in-the-blank*, than take pride in the fact that you're not "getting ahead".

You might want to try that dress thing, though. Something in a ..... hmmm..
... mauve smock. Show 'em what you're made of.

Is your position an upward mobility slot? You may be stuck "administratively" of course management could upgrade the position--and it doesn't sound like that is gonna happen. Request that CPO re-rate your slot, but be careful, sometimes that can backfire.

What you're seeing is typical government "f-up and move up" mentality---government managers don't have the intelligence to understand office politics...

    J/k, I'd NEVER call them!

The branch manager told me "I manager tasks, not people". Therefore, he will not do anything to promote anyone. The branch manager's boss, the director, will only response if one suck up to him....and I don't play that game.

Sounds like it's time to request a meeting with the IG (thru your chain of command though).

You have to be systematic, and careful with this. Do you have your past appraisals? and they are all good ratings? If so, here's your starting point. Ask to meet with your rater and than ask specifically what they want to see from you to justify a promotion. Then work from there. Keep proof, compile data of things you've accomplished, etc. Start building your case.

I did this, and though it took 5 long years, but my position was upgraded, my series changed, and I got my promotions.

Let your feet do the talking.

Do what 99% of my relatives did. Sell the house, move to Texas, buy a house for cash, bank the rest. Hopefully, the housing market hasn't collapsed totally in your area.

You will have to put up with the heat and lousy asian food unless you're in Houston but there's a separate list of issues moving to Houston.

Yes, once again, I should call you 'Harold'. Time for Harold to leave.

Go to the highest ranking manager in your office and express disappointment to the blatant bias and discrimination. Say something about the talking with the National Labor Relations, ACLU and lawsuits. Do this only after you have a job offer in hand. Hire thugs to walk up to your boss or some of the low life scum peers that you have, have your hired thug confirm their name. Some thing like "Hey your Bob Jones aren't you?" When they confirm have their picture taken and the thug walks away. Drop the gloves Danny and throw a few sucker punches at the kiss **** bureaucrats. Demand raises and promotions or threaten the "**** is going to fly".

There's actually talk of a class-action lawsuit by those of us over 40 of age against "management". I may have to sign up since I turned 40 last October.

Maybe it's time to give the "private sector" a shot. Generally, if you are making someone money, you have leverage...revenue producers are hard to come by.

As do I. Job security is excellent, benefits are excellent, and the pay is good. I get a 10% match on my first 5% cont on my 401k, 66% of my health insurance premium paid for by the gubment, 27 days of paid vacation/year, 13 days of paid sick leave/year. Also, very good retirement benefits, and cheap life insurance. For me, with 15yrs already invested via the US Army, it was a no brainer; plus it allowed me to stay in Arizona.

The downside is that sometimes you get stuck working with/for **** heads, and this is true of any job. You just have to out-smart them--and trust me, it isn't much of a challenge. It's easy to keep the **** heads at bay if you know your job and perform well, and know the regulations.

I'd be happier making less money and not being a kiss ****. I don't kiss ****, ever. I'll help, I'll work, but I also say whatever is on my mind in regards to the task at hand. I've been told I wont get too far doing that, I'm not worried since most of the people that dont like me will retire soon anyway :D

Indeed, the job security is unmatched at my current job. I think the frustration also comes from the fact that those who work at the same position across the street (the City of San Francisco) get paid a lot more. Don't even mention about those who work for the Feds. I must say that due to the never-ending State budget deficit, it's hard to get any raise out of the State government. So, in some ways, it's like forever playing for a losing team. However, at this rate, I will soon be able to qualify as someone who's "low income" based on City of San Francisco's income standards. Hmmmm....maybe I can finally get some affordable housing.

I came from private sector and I am used to the ups and downs of the economy. As for the possible class-action lawsuit, that was mentioned to me by a coworker who worked the same position for over 14 years without a promotion.:D
