I heard about this on the radio today. In HVAC speak, this is called a 2 pipe system because it only allows hot or cold water to run. Bet the nimrods on Beacon Hill didn't think of this!

I know nothing about HVAC but if it's anything like the **** we had in our highschool the heat would be on in the summer and air conditioning in the winter. And we were not allowed to open windows as this could throw off the heating system more? Sounds like a bunch of idiots ran that place and are running the elderly place too.

It's a state law that they can't shut off the heat until June 15th. The politicians are Stupid F*cks!

It is not an easy or an admirable thing to rationalize away common sense.

    CLASSIC!!!

    Definitely sig worthy.

Can't you leave the heating units on but not have them producing heat? Like there's no need to pump heat into a building that's already 87 degrees but maybe at night it drops down to 60 and so I can see how old people would want it warmer then.

What? Too many laws in the People's Republik of Massachusetts? Heresy! They're just "looking out for you."
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I don't think you understand. They're not running the heat during the heatwave, BUT, under MA law, they CAN'T turn it OFF until 6/15. Therefore, they CAN'T turn ON the a/c until 6/16. And the whole east coast is suffering an early heatwave. So, these elderly & disable people are SUFFERING because of the stupid 'nanny state' mentality.

"With no breeze to move the air inside the building, it settled on a person, beading into sweat drops with the slightest of movement."

If it's a 2-pipe system (reheat), the building operator can at least open up outside air dampers 100 % and supply whatever fresh air is outside.

That has to be cooler than a closed apartment.

If nobody has any nuts, than leave the boiler(s) on and open up the loop bypass valve 100 %, close the main loop isolation valves, and the only thing you're heating is the piping inside the boiler room.

Snip one wire (or lift one lead) on the loop temp sensor .... Voila ! The building automation system (or PLC ) thinks the loop is at 195 degrees and the boiler(s) never cycle on.

If the building operator is a licensed stationary engineer, his license is issued by the Department of Public Safety.
Any engineer worth his salt would kill the heat and fire up the chiller(s) and defend his actions based upon "Public Safety".

The INTENT of the law that the heating system in housing for the elderly must remain operational until June 15 is this:
"Hey, Mr. Slum Landlord ! If it's cold outside, don't plan on shutting off the heat to old folks just to save on your heating bill !".

Old folks suffering due to incompetence of all involved.

MBBL, thanks for figuring it out for them. Now all you have to do is grab a pipe wrench and go SLAP somebody on Beacon Hill with IT! You're asking a STATE employee to use rational, INDEPENDENT thinking. Very frownd upon!
BTW, were you a 'snipe' in the navy? BT or MM perhaps?

    MBBL.......intent? thats hilarious.

I dont blame the building owners here, I blame the State Law and the lack of flexibility in it. It's not often I can bag on another state law being more R-tarded than Jersey, but here is one.

NJ has minum temperature Laws, but nothing saying wether a heating or AC system has to be on regardless of weather.

from the article, looks like building managment followed common sense (a big no no) last year by killing the heat, and some complained it was too cold (heat off in late May is ok in my book, call me kooky). Now there gonna get railed for not activating the ac fast enough? cmon!

I am a State Employee who has taken oodles of grief for refusing to stop using Common Sense in all of my desicion making. pretty makes me either loved or hated (no in betweens) by staff above and below me...LOL
