Hi!

I'm thinking of getting monitor 40' for the fronts and rears. Is that a bad idea? Should I get something smaller for the rears, like Monitor 30's?

4 Monitor 40's will sound good, however Monitor 60's for the fronts and 30's for the rear will sound even better if you can swing it.

The rears can be the same as the fronts no problem. Are you looking for a bookshelf speaker, or do you have room for something a little larger?

Thx guys. For some reason the monitor 40's sounded better (brighter) than the monitor 60's or 70's! I was surprized as well but these babies sound fantastic!

Bigger isn't always better, but it's likely that the 60's wanted more power than your receiver outputs.

Monitor 40's were my first polks (unfortunately zapped one doing something too stupid to admit publically) -- still think they remain an incredible speaker for the price. Sure you'll enjoy them as much as I did.
    LR Setup:
    Polk RTi10's, RTi6's, CSiA6 (5 ch setup)
    Onkyo 705 & Denon 3808ci Receiver, Onk 875
    Parasound 2250 Amp
Sony 26" KDL series Bravia LCD
    Panny DMR-EH75 Recorder
Panny DVD-F87 (5 disk DVD player)
    NAD T585 (DVD/SACD)
    Yamaha DVD-C961 (5 disk SACD/DVD)
    SciAnt Explorer 8500HD Cable Box
    Orig & 5Gen iPods, , Wii

    Plans/Fantasies:
    • 400 disk player that handles ALL formats, sounds as good as NAD with Panasonic interface & compatability.

Xandra, the Monitor 70's were driven by an Onky 805 at the local C City. My guess is that the 40's sound brighter because they have the same number of drivers/tweeters in a cabinet half the size of Monitor 50's??
