I have a pair of sda's that were given to me. Btw I'm new here. I love these and have been using them for a few years now. I have a bit of a problem though. The left channel drivers are starting to knock like the voice coils are seperating. Are there replacements available for these. I love them and would hate to replace them with new speakers.
Thank you

First of all,welcome...Second,what model of SDA's do you own? There might be a member or two that has some spare drivers laying around.

You can also obtain replacement tweeters and "most" mid-drivers from Polk Audio.

Welcome to Club Polk. +1 to what Mike said.
We need a little more info.
    Ben
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

I don't know what model they are. How do I tell? I looked on the back and there is a serial number but no model number. Btw I am about to pick up a second set of the exact same speakers for about 150. Is that a good price on them? Sorry like I said I don't know much about them but I've never had better sounding ones.
    Thanks
For what its worth the fronts look like this. Passive on the bottom, 2 drivers side by side in the middle, and one tweet on the top. Any help? Lol

I'd say you are a dead wringer for an SDA 2B.

Not sure but I think you can get replacements from Polk. Call Polk Customer Service and check, I'm not sure which drivers the 2b has.

Anyhow, welcome, enjoy and good luck getting your 2b's back in shape!

    What's the serial #?

Your best bet is to pull the driver in question and read the part number off the back.

    [EDIT:I need to type faster]

    Welcome

Besides apperance, good condition means no cat damage to the surounds, air tight enclosure and no frozen drivers. You should gently press in and hold the Passive radiator and watch the drivers. They should both move out toward you and stay out until you release the PR. A frozen driver will not move. Cat damage becomes apparent as air leaks out through the holes.

Be careful in handling the speakers; you can ruin the drivers by dropping the cabinet.

$150 is a very good price for a set of 2Bs if you don't need to repair anything. Drivers and tweeters are about 50 bucks each and the PR is very, very difficult to find. Hope this helps you.

Yes it does. Thank you for your help. There is no damage to the speakers at all and with the push test the drivers move great. The cabinets have wear but not excessive. I'm gonna pick them up today.

if they are the same are your current pair.. then you would have spare parts to make one really sweet sounding pair or have two sweet sounding pairs.. but they do sound like SDA 2A's or 2B's to me. I have owned both.

Pull the PRs and take a look at the XO. You should find a paper tag that identifies the model. Otherwise post a photo of said XO and we can ID it for you. Also, look at the interconect cable. Is it two flat prongs or a flat and a round pin? Inside the cabinet, with the PR out, do you see one or two wires attached to the interconnect cable?

According to the number on the drivers they are 2a's. I can't wait to get the other set. No idea what I'm going to do with them but at that price I can't pass up a spare set. Now I need to find an amp, a center channel, and a powered sub for my theatre system. My tv came back from the repair shop and now I want my sound to match the huge tv. lol

You don't necessarily need a center. Do a search on "phantom center".

I would just buy a center as planned. Phantom centers don't anchor the dialog which is the primary benefit (IMHO) of a center. If you're not going to do 5 to 7 real speakers in home theater you may as well do a search on "Bose Lifestyle".

Have you ever tried a phamtom center?

If your mains image well enough, there's no need for the extra speaker. Then again, I was never happy using SDA's for HT.

Don't know if the question was directed at me or not but I have played around with a phantom center, double center, phantom surrounds, etc. In fact, when plain Dolby Surround first came out in the way-back years I used a phantom center for a while. Better than no center. Dolby Digital changed everything because movie makers could now specifically place a sound or effect in a specific location. Phantom center circuitry takes ALL of the sounds in the right and left channel and uses them to create the center. Not what was intended by the maker. Works OK for vocals, doesn't do too much for panning effects like speeding cars, planes, etc.

I do agree that the SDA effect can create a similar unwanted problems. They work pretty well for surrounds.
