The monitor series is not known for good bass, but try moving your speakers (or your seat) to another area in your room. Since the wavelength of lower frequencies are larger, you might be missing the "spot"...AVR: H/K AVR240
Fronts: Monitor 50s
Center: CSI3
surrounds: R15s
Sub:Velodyne DPS10
Dvd/Cd: Samsung HD upconverter (for now)
TV: 50" Sammy Plasma
game hardware: 360 and gcn.

Are they set to small or large? If they are set to small, they will only play above the crossover frequency and the bass will go to your sub.
If you put them to large and run some music with bass in stereo mode, you should hear some bass from those bigguns. So, try that, if you're still not getting bass and/or a full-range sound, make sure the brass jumpers are on properly (did you remove and only hook the monster wire to the top speaker inputs?).
A separate amp would be nice, but don't get ahead of yourself until you figure out what else might be wrong. You'd go broke in 2 months if you buy a new amp everytime you're not happy with your system.
Where are you located? Maybe a good Polkaritan can come by and help diagnose the problem.
If you do decide on a separate amp for more oomph, I might have one for you within your budget that sounds great with my Monitor package.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

I am in Lake Jackson Texas about 35 miles south of Houston. HOW DO I CHANGE BETWEEN THE LARGE AND SMALL SETTING? I DON'T SEE ANYTHING IN THE MANUAL ABOUT THAT.AVR...........Onkyo TX-SR703

Did you buy them new? Keep in mind that the Monitor 70's require ample break-in time before the lower woofers become unhinged. I had a pair and had the same response you had right out of the box. After about three weeks of use, they fleshed out and dug deeper.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

It probably has an onscreen menu that can be used to calibrate your system. Have you used the mic to calibrate your system?
I can actually change from small to large on the remote of my HK, so I go with small with various crossover settings for 5.1 / HT and 2-channel stereo set to Large + sub for music.
See if you can find an onscreen display or re-read the manual.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand
