It's been about a month long trip but I've definatley signed onto the Vintage Polk train. It started with the daughter's donated 5jr's for her birthday system. Those led me to get into a set of 7B's for the basement. Now the stands are done and I am happy. Serious critical listening hasn't happened yet, but will occur soon, hopefully. From what I've heard so far.....there's no comparison for the money. They are on a Rotel 971 right now and they sound great. The Rotel will soon be replaced by a Carver pro model and I am looking forward to hearing the difference. Regardless, I am excited as they sound fantastic.....here are some preliminary pics.....

Also, I assume the tweeters are the Peerless from what I've read here. I'm hoping to confirm that. As a note the stands have a 3 degree tilt, as per instructions I found on this forum. Thanks to those who contributed their plans.

    Congrats on those beauty's, we grew up listening to my dad's 7's. Those are beautiful and look great but the sound, we suspect, you'll find most pleasing!! Enjoy!!

    BTW NICE job on those stands; gorgeous and functional!!

    Upgraded crossover? Oh man, I thought I was done :eek: I suppose while I'm modding the Toshiba 3950 I can re-work the crossover. Do you happen to have a parts list?

    ANWKLO, the stands are 16" high exclusive of the [URL="http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=%

    34uf.

    2 = 4.5ohm Mills resistors
    2 = 12uf Solen caps
    2 = 33uf (they dont have 34uf) Solen caps
    and silver solder.

    I'll be doing my 5b's on Wed. this week. The 33uF will work fine; it's well within the 10% tolerance of the original 34uF electrolytic. The Solens are 2% if I remember correctly. With shipping from Parts Express < $50 (sans the silver solder).

    Do it, it will work wonders. Wednesday can't get here fast enough for me :) .

    Yep. The only reason I didn't buy from Madisound was because I thought they don't carry Mills resistors.

    They don't. What's the prevailing opinion on these. Madisound is convienent for me as I don't have to wait for/pay for shipping.

    wrong link, sorry. Try this.

    Haven't even touched them. They have been bangin away just fine stock. However, I have just completed my first re-cap on a pair or EPI 150's (very simple one cap design) and am now getting more comfortable with a soldering iron. My project list is now growing. Next up is a pair of Snell JII's, then maybe a pair of KEF 304/2's. I'm also currently looking to re-edge a pair of AR48s's.

    The 7B's have become the measuring stick for everything else that comes in. They do everything well. The JII's are great with Jazz and the like, the KEF's rock like nobody's business, etc..., but the Polk's can handle all comers very well. I should do the re-cap as they could only get better. They will most likely get done after the Snells.

    You will really be amazed at the improvement once you decide to tackle the crossover upgrade. Last summer I followed the postings on this forum (some listed above) and reworked a set of 7Bs that I have owned since 1978. I always loved the speakers but the improvement was noticible and substantial. Details that I previously thought were very good are now much better. I am not an electronics wizard and have not done much soldering since I built dynaco kits 30 years ago, but I was able to finish the crossovers in about 4 hours. It is a great project that your will reap the rewards from on a daily basis
