I'll make the trip to the theater for this one...Honoured to be, an original SOPA founding member

It's limited. Wide release isn't until January. I'll be seeing it tonight.

That totally sucks. I was all pumped up to view it tonight. Dang it all.
When in January is it being wide released?

A fairytale for adults.......My kind of movie. Seems like LOTR was the last really good "fairytale for adults" movie made. But this has a ton of potential. Narnia was good also, I see this movie along those lines. Sound like an awsome soundtrack too.

Jan 19th is the wide release date. I guess this is a Spanish film as well, I didn't know that. But that's ok. It won't turn me off to have subtitles.

Did anybody here see Neil Gaiman's Mirrormask? I've read the book, just haven't seen the film. Seems Pan's Labyrinth takes a lot of inspiration from the Sandman comics....I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Well...Del Toro has said the film has strong connections in theme to The Devil's Backbone and should be seen as an informal sequel dealing with some of the issues raised there[3]. In 2004 Del Toro said: "Pan is an original story. Some of my favorite writers (Borges, Blackwood, Machen, Dunsany) have explored the figure of the God Pan and the symbol of the labyrinth. These are things that I find very compelling (remember the labyrinth image on Hellboy?) and I am trying to mix them and play with them." Some of the works he drew on for inspiration include Jorge Luis Borges's Labyrinths, Arthur Machen's The Great God Pan and The White People, Lord Dunsany's The Blessing of Pan, Algernon Blackwood, Pan's Garden, and Francisco Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son. -
This looks pretty cool. I didn't hear anything about it until I read this post. Now I can't wait to see it....Shawn

Yeah, I bought the Mirrormask dvd for my kids. It is definitely great eye candy and has a decent storyline and good acting. Great demo dvd at the very least. I'll likely buy it again when it's released on HDDVD."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

Well, this one is out for wide release today. I saw it in Chicago a couple weeks back and I do have to say it's one of the best fantasy type films I have ever seen. This is not for kids by any stretch of the imagination, and you'd think with the R rating that would go without saying, but there you go -- not for the kids.
BTW -- it's in Spanish, and the movie is subtitled in English. You should be able to get over it real fast and still be completely immersed in the movie, but for those of you who just can't stand it you might want to be wary of that before you go. -

Sweetness. That's exactly what I wanted to hear from you! I can't wait to see it, probably Monday, my next day off.
I think the Subtitles will be ok... thanks for the update.Honoured to be, an original SOPA founding member

Yeah, if this type of thing is up your alley you'll love it. I went in with the highest of expectations, which usually leads to disappointment. Not here.
I just hope they throw this on HD-DVD...the part with this guy is insane:

I saw and enjoyed the Devil's Backbone a few weeks ago, and this looks even better!, I'll try to check it out soon. The DB's isn't as fantastic as this seems to be, its more rooted in real scenery and such, still a good horror flick.

Pans Labyrinth - Indy film that kicked **** at Sundance. Haven't seen it, my boss says it's the best film he's seen all year. (My boss is a major moviephile, even makes his own sometimes on occasion) <--- insert dirty joke here.
I'm going to go see it, The Departed (one last time) and The Queen all before Oscar time so I can get a better idea of who's got a shot for Best Picture. Never go to the theaters all year, but always do around this time. -
Six Oscar nominations....

Saw this yesterday... first off.. it's not at ALL what I thought it would be. It was a drama through and through. Nothing wrong with that at all, mind you, just not what I was expecting from all the reviews pumping it up as a fantasy. I went in looking for a fantasy world and got mostly a war movie with a side story of a girls world.
It was extremely well done, moving performances, and all around rock solid. Definitely a must see on DVD. The fantasy side of things, were fairly slim, which surprised me. The girl who played the main role was top notch, as were all the actors. The subtitles didn't throw me at all, and I would never take a movie down a notch for not being in English.
HOWEVER, it felt slow. Not a bad slow, just a slow unfolding drama. And it was extremely depressing. Rather dark, and make you feel sad when you left the theater. Maybe I went in with the wrong idea, (I was extremely worked up to see this too mind you) but I didn't expect it to be quite so depressing.
I will most likely buy this on DVD, but I don't think it will be for everybody. It was very creative and original, and for that it still ranks very high on my scale. The limited creatures in it (All but one were shown in the previews) were amazing.
9 outta 10 stars for me. I only wished it had included more of a fantasy aspect, instead of the drama.Honoured to be, an original SOPA founding member

10 out of 10 stars here. Went tonight with my friend and we both loved the film.
-
I went with a group to see it tonight (Mostly film students) We all loved it. It was incredible but very depressing. Definitely worth it to see it in a theater. But, if you don't like brutality and interrogation scenes (I know my sister won't watch interrogations) it's not for you --- or close your eyesGod shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8

Out on DVD tomorrow. This is a definite buy for me. I did not see it in the theater, but from everything i've read about it, definite buy!
The early review I read said a perfect video transfer with a DTS ES 6.1 soundtrack.
OHHHH YEAH!

Ya, I will buy it for sure... just don't expect a LOTR kinda fantasy. If you go in with DRAMA in mind, you will not be disappointed! If you think, Creatures galore, you'll most likely not enjoy it as much...

Blind buy for me as well, I cannot wait. I'm just bummed I've gotta buy an SD, no hi-def release for this one, yet.If...

I'll probably wait for it to come to BD before I buy. Have it on my Blockbuster Queue though.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to see this one in the theater. UNBELIEVABLE movie! But Demi's right... not entirely what you would expect. Expect a healthy dose of the "real world" to make the child's fantasy world all the more outlandish.I never had it like this where I grew up. Just finished watching it.
Yes, WOW! Phenominal!
As was said before, more war drama than anything. Don't want to add any spoilers, but it was a depressing, but yet satisfying ending. I have no idea who the little girl is that played the lead, Ofelia, but what a performance!
The DVD was awesome. PQ and SQ were top notch! A must buy in my book!

Just got finished watching this movie and I loved it. I thought it was going to be more fantasy than war drama, but nonetheless it was very enjoyable, well written and had great acting. A possible buy for me (and that's not done very often).

I really recommend that those of you purchasing it actually go ahead and spring for the 2-Disc. Great stuff on there from Guillermo del Toro.
