    Hey,
Why everyone is making a big deal over DiCaprio, and Nicholson, which is well deserved, what about Wallberg ??, man has he come a long way. Has everyone forgotten about all the big stars he has co-starred with ?/. The Academy reconized him, so should we all. Go Wallberg.

I really didn't see Wallberg's performance as Oscar worthy.

I thought Walberg was actually pretty great, but there just wasn't enough screen time for him to deserve any awards, if you ask me.

    Remakes don't deserve Oscars.

It's a good movie considering it pretty much copied the original masterpiece (scene for scene, camera angle for camera angle, twist for twist etc.). Scorsese really earned this as a pity Oscar for his earlier works not this imitation job.

sorry for ranting but it's frustrating to see the Hollywood train vie for an Oscar while downplaying the original source.

The same guy wrote the screenplay for both the "original" and the Scorcese version. The "original" was made all of three years before the Scorcese version. So the Scorcese version isn't so much a "remake" as "an American version of hte same movie." To call it an imitation job is a bit of an exaggeration.

I really liked the Departed and I thought Leonardo did a great acting job on it. When I first saw it I didn't know that it was based on another movie..today I rented Infernal Affairs. The only negative I had with The Departed was that I thought it was a little plot heavy with just a tad too many twists. A minor complaint because I thought it was a very good movie overall. As far a Scorsese getting an Oscar whether it was deserved or not I find a bit amusing because I think the whole academy thing is a joke anyway..I mean these are some of the most self absorbed, self-congratulatory people on the planet. If I hear one more actor with a GED refer to some other actor or director as a genius I think my head is going to explode! LOL

    Correction-
The guys who wrote the screenplay for Infernal Affairs was Andrew Lau and Alan Mak. William Monahan won an Oscar for adapting the story or "Americanizing" it. Which wasn't really a stretch for him.

It's an imitation but you don't have to take my word for it. Even the director of Infernal Affairs calls it that way.

The difference is that Infernal Affairs wasn't very good, but the Departed was.

This wasn't the first Good Cop, Bad Cop movie, Infernal Affairs or not...

pq was outstanding on hd dvd. watched it last night. after i finally got into it, it was a pretty good movie. i'll watch it again. i loved the many plots and twists. and a bit past half-way through, i kept anticipating walhberg's character to break back into the storyline.

Funny I just read your comment before heading down to the cafeteria to eat my lunch. I sat near a table mostly composed of people of Chinese descent. At one point they were discussing the recent Oscars ceremony and it was brought up and agreed upon that Infernal Affairs was vastly superior to The Departed. :D I guess you could say that had a bit of bias though.

I saw The Departed and thought it was so so. Never saw Infernal Affairs and after seeing The Departed I really have no desire to.

I don't really understand the argument, anyways. It won best ADAPTED screenplay, not original, so ... what's the complaint? The "academy" thought it was the best picture of the year, I don't believe there's any stipulation in that award for something being a remake or adaptation of an earlier (and FOREIGN, I might add, since these are awards for American cinema) work. You claim it was "downplayed" that it's a remake, that doesn't even make sense. It wasn't 'played' at all, it's irrelevant to whether the movie was GOOD or BAD. If everyone who votes for these awards thought that remakes don't "deserve" Oscars, then it wouldn't have won (and the best Adapted Screenplay award wouldn't really exist either). Luckily, the vast majority of people don't agree with your opinion.

Well, I watch foreign films all of the time (hell, I couldn't wait for Pan's Labyrinth before it was even a nut in the AA's eye). I fell asleep 20 minutes in to Infernal Affairs like what, a year ago when it hit DVD. The Departed was completely different in terms of acting and just the atmosphere.

I saw it opening day and knew it was going to go on to get nominations. The ending was retarded, but other than that -- great movie.

Well, look at it this way. If Infernal Affairs made it big in Hollywood, do you think Marty would have gone ahead with the remake? Probably not cause the movies pretty much mirror each other.

Infernal Affairs was a huge hit to all of Asia (there's a vast majority there too ;) ) The only mistake IA made was being a foreign movie. America doesn't like to read subtitles let alone a film with unfamiliar actors in an unfamiliar setting. It's too bad as Foreign cinema can offer a whole lot more. Well, at least Hollywood will repackage/remake it for us instead.

Brad Pitt and company took advantage of this, bought the rights, added Hollywood's star power and thus begin their campaign for an Oscar.

My beef concerns one word- respect. Considering IA played a huge role to the success of the Departed, than try looking for IA credits on your Departed dvd and you'll know what "downplaying" I'm talking about. There's more beefs but so far nuff said.

I'm not a huge DiCaprio fan, but I have to say that this was the best role I have ever seen him portray, period.

I never liked DiCaprio, mostly because of cheesy roles like "Titanic", but the more I've seen of him, the more impressed with him I've been. Movies like "The Aviator" and "Gangs of New York", he was really great in.

Check out "Whats Eating Gilbert Grape", one of his first roles and an incredible job. He plays a mentally challenged young man and really pulls it off well with his co-star Johnny Depp.

Finally saw it. HD-DVD, 1080p. Great PQ and photography. Almost an exact copy of the original with the storyline, with the addition of Wahlberg's character Dingham. Never got as involving as the original did, and I didn't care for Dingham and the overacting from Wahlberg (worse than Jack from whom I expected "more" after reading about it). Acting wasn't bad but not that great either.

Overall not a bad movie, well worth the time to watch it. Internal Affairs though was a better, more involving movie in my opinion.
