I have a sony 34" tube and a denon 2910 dvd player. All has been wonderful until I tried to use a DVI cable to see how much better the upconverting would be. Well, I bought a decent lil dvi-d cable off the 'bay for cheap and nothing seems to be working right. It will show a picture for a second, then black for a second. Then on for a second, then off for a second. Now I double checked my TV owner's manual and it does accept HDCP. I turned on the DVI output on the dvd player. I'm out of ideas. It has to be the TV because even when I put on the dvd setup menu, it still flashes a picture. So my guess is it's the TV or the cable. All ideas are welcome...

Hmmmmm, that is odd. I can't say that i've ever had that problem before. A few years ago when i first got my HDTV.. i also purchased a DVD player with DVI output.

I hated it. It did upconvert the signal, but it always looked dark.. and the picture was tiny.. about 1/4 of the screen size.. smack dab in the middle of the screen. When it would upconvert the signal to 1080.

With component cables.. it looked good.. so in ended up going that route instead. I'm not totally convinced DVI/HDMI for tube TV's is all that it's cracked up to be. Maybe for other types yes. Plasma, LCD, DLP, etc.

Aren't there two different types of DVI cables? maybe you need the other one instead.

you may have to make your tv "see" the specific input coming from that component stream. try the user menu to see if you can set the inputs. that usually makes things work correctly. if that doesn't work, it might not be the correct dvi cable, or even worse, your tv may be lying to you. you know how hdmi works? it would be like that, only it just wouldn't work...hmmm

well, my input #7 is my DVI in so I changed the input so that's obviously not it. I don't know what you mean by setting the inputs. I know how HDMI works but your comment didn't make sense to me...

I have a 34" Sony tube (KD-34XS955) and use the same Denon 2910 via the HDMI interface. Every once in a while when I turn on the DVD player I'll get what you described - flashing between a black screen and the picture. If I turn off the TV, wait a few secs, and turn it on again (leaving the DVD player on the whole time), everything works fine. May not work for you since you're using the DVI input on your TV, but worth a shot.

Toxis, what is the native HD resolution of the TV, and what resolution are you sending to it from the DVD player?

I have to do the trick Mulveling said sometimes when using my HD cable box and the Hitachi, it will process as 480p until I turn the Hitachi off and back on.

the TV is a tube, no native resolution. Its HD ready (no tuner) and I have tried sending it 720p, 1080i and 480p via DVI. I'm gonna try that trick in a minute.
