Monitor 40's are great bookshlef's. You can use it as fronts if you room is small-medium size. Clean sound at any volumes. Fantastic value !!!!My current new system (step by step )

considering that the 50's and the 40's are essentially the same speakers (the only difference being the encasings), and that the 50's generally retail for $199 apiece brand new...
then yeah, it's a hell of a dealI never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -
I picked up a set, new, at Circuit City a while back for $150 a pair. Excellent speakers, running them as my fronts, and am very pleased with them.
Get 'em.Sal Palooza -

ok, I might do it, but I am probably only gonna get one for my center.. does this do OK with R30's as fronts?

It's funny you should ask. Right now my HT is band-aided from what it normally is. My center is being fixed at the moment, so I moved a Monitor 40 to the center (they were taking care of surround duties). I'm using R50's for fronts and I don't think the front stage blends well right now. The R50's and Monitor 40's have a different sound to them.
Is the Monitor 40 a good center channel speaker? Yes! I'm very impressed how well it is performing as a center. It's handling dialog very well and is definitely a better center than the CS1 I started out with.
Since I'm using R50's for the fronts, and you're using R30's, don't let my opinion stop you from getting a killer deal. I looked over the specs for the R30's and on paper it seems like they would be a better match for the Monitor 40 than my R50's are. Go for it! I bet you'll love it.Fronts: DIY Statements from htguide.com
