It is all Tour's #%$@ fault....

OK....So I'm looking through my CDs to see if there is any interesting cover art I can use in Bruce's "Rock Album Cover Game". Found a few and then got to thinking about my LPs down in the basement. Found a few more and realized that I've got maybe 150 or so very good albums that I've never replaced with CDs and haven't listened to in quite a while. I have been vocal in my reluctance to "GO BACK" to the inconvienience of vinyl. That said, I though I would give a couple of them a listen. Good music...but...all of the sound issues I remembered that I didn't like. Plus you gotta hold the LP just right so as to not get any fingerprints....clean the LP...etc...etc... Benefit of doubt...so I figured I would get a new cartridge and stylus for the Miracord (a fairly well regarded TT) since the ones I had were the originals from the early 70s. $60 + later from the Needle Doctor I've ordered a brand new Ortofon OM 10 Super cartridge. (actually ordered the OM 5 - but they were out and cut me a deal on the 10 Super)

SUPER_OM.JPG

Couple of days later, the cartridge arrives. I start to hook it up and realize the 35 year old headshell leads are all messed up. I was able to cannibalize another headshell and a little soldering and I'm good to go...or so I think. Everythings hooked up...lo and behold...NO RIGHT CHANNEL. Check all the leads and connections...nothing wrong. There is a guy here in town that does a lot of vintage audio repair. We talked. The problem must be somewhere in the tonearm which with this particular Miracord is a bear. He has it now.

In the meantime...when looking for cartridges I came across a sale at Audio Advisor for an "open box" Goldring GR 1.2 turntable. Highly reviewed in several publications. $244 + shipping = $251. I bite.

MHGR1.2_000.JPG

Couple days later UPS delivers a BRAND NEW Goldring GR 1.2 turntable. It's very easy to set up. Put a couple of albums on...same crappy clicks and pops. I find a couple of pristine LPs and listen to them without the surface noise. Not bad. I now realize if I am even going to be able to tolerate this format at all, I am going to have to spend some more cash on a vacuum record cleaner. I've figured out which way I'm going with this (KAB EV-1). Another $200± for the machine and cleaning supplies.

I have now had the opportunity to listen to several LPs that are in very good shape and clean. They sound good. I am waiting on the cleaner which should improve the sound of quite a few of my LP collection. As much as I think I will enjoy listening to some of the stuff I liked well enough to purchase over the years, I am not sold that it is the primary format for me. I DO NOT like the ritual involved in playing and maintaining LPs. That is not going to change. I have justified my $600± in expenditures (so far) by rationalizing the replacement of the LPs, if possible, would cost over $1,500.

THANKS BRUCE.....It's all your fault...

    :D Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I love it. :D

If you have read the Tommyknockers you truly know the pathway you have "tripped" over. I'd say you have the ship about half-way uncovered!!!! Yea, Tour, that bastage, 40 buck shure cartridge got me going; then a huge assist from MM is resposible for my new craving.

They are the TT Pusher Man. Hey bud, need a cartridge, how a about phono-pre for a little psychadelic music ride, mumble...mumble, here I will give you one to get you going.

I am up to at least a one record a day fix with frequent all day binging.

I wanna new drug, one that wont keep me up all night.............

Edit--I forgot Steve, after a bit the cleaning fluid will start too, well, you'll find out.

right on, Shack! Enjoyed the story and appreciated the perils of hang around with Tour ;)

My excuse is, the table is not even hooked up, and it has those cheapo RCA built-in connector, so it CAN'T be good. There..
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

This is one of the reasons I keep putting off my TT purchase.
I know it is going to cost me big time in the long run.

There's nothing cooler than a turntable spinning a record---it's something about all these mechanical parts producing beautiful music. I have resisted a VERY strong urge lately to buy a TT in the $600 range, because I know once the novelty wears off, I'm left cleaning albums....I do love TT's though....must not give in...must resist...

Nice table, has the OEM equivalent of a Rega RB-250 arm, which just so happens to retail for more than he paid for the entire table.

    Good job Shackdaddy.

And the Goldring Elektra cartridge retails for about $90. Even at Audio Advisor's normal price of $299 it seemed to be a pretty good deal. It came down to the Goldring at AA or a Pro-Ject Debut III at Musicians Friend.com for $280.

Great, another vinyl convert. I remember the days when it was tube conversion, what has the world come to! At least the digital amp conversion was short lived and uninteresting.

    Enjoy, it's a cool TT.

Ok, so yes, I know, this is a bit "random" and no, I have not had any Rum (yet).

    Men like curved objects.
    Tubes have curves.
Records do the ultimate curve a cirlce
The Analog wave form is a curve.
It is OK to have a square as long as their is a curved object "plugged" into it.
Tubes and TT's both start with T so they fit together like PB&J
Triangles always Trump Squares as they start with a T, expecially Tubed Triangles.
Tubed Triangles is another double T, way cool factor.
Its OK to like something called Manley because they have tubes.
Manley's that are Triangles and have Tubes and hook to TT's are of course Teriffic.
My name is Ted which starts with T and explains alot.

    Have a nice day.

    Shack I like your idea.
This TT is like the one I have at home.
It is the only TT I have right now and most of the records I have for it I have never heard of and I don't think any of them are vinyl although, I love to listen to them.
I bought it and all the albums from my Grandparrents estate sale and they purchased it new.
We last played it about two weeks ago during a power outage.
The sound stage is not up to most of your standards but the vintage sound is great.

you guys want 20-40 more radios like that. The guy I bought my turn table from has a basement full of stuff like that, from table tops to massive floor standers. All of them were in awesome shape. He also had a few boxes of tubes in the basement as well as some reel to reel stuff. If I ever get back down that way I'm going to stop by the guys house and see if he will let me take pics. I know he was trying to sell the stuff, and I would have loved to pick up a console or 2, just don't have the funds or the room.
