Polks web site rates these speakers at 20 - 275 watts. Is that 275 continuous or peak? If it is continuous what is the peak handling capability of these awsome sounding speakers? If the 275 watts is peak then what is the continuous?

thanks
Steve

    Recommended Amplifier Power 20 - 275 w/channel

it doesn't say anything about continuous or peak handeling power for the speakers. those numbers are for your amp. the Monitor 70's would operate best between 20 and 275 wpc. a person would be deaf by now if they ran their speakers at peak or 275 w/continuous per channel

They get plenty loud without much power at all! Im just running a few watts through mine and they are loud and clean.

One would think so but I originally had the Monitor 60's (see my original post on the issue at http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35656)
and blew them first by clipping/distortion from under powering them then blew another set (over power this time) after I hooked up an external power amp. The amp is an Adcom GFA-555 rated at 200 wpc. The Monitor 60's are rated 20 - 200 watts. This leads me to belive that the high end of that range is actually the peak and I know this Adcom will, for short burst, far exceed its rating. I just want to make sure that when the wifey wants to rock she will not be over powering the speakers.

use an amp that's 3/4 the speakers' max power rating. I would drive the Monitor 70 with a 200watt amplifier but nothing higher than that. I've found that the 3/4 rule is a safe bet for pretty much all speakers, regardless of ohm.

and yes it is better to overpower speakers than underpower them. :)
