Samsung Slimfit TV's

Does anyone have any experience with these? Specifically this one.

I've read some "not so fantastic" reviews on the first generation models. Seems to have a few geometry problems.

My main goal is to get the biggest television that will fit in a 34"wide x 32" tall x 17" deep.

We can cut the back out of the cabinet, but that doesn't help narrow the decision very much. It will be going in my wife's step-grandmother's den. She has an old console television in the living room, but will watch this one with much more frequency.

We looked at LCD, but for the price, I think the Samsung would work just fine. I checked the older model out today at Circuit City and it seemed to have a good picture. If it were my television, I would get something a little better, but I think it will serve its purpose.

If you have any major horror stories about it, let me know before I place the order(within 24 hours from not).

Thanks as always.

For a Grandma, I would look at ease of use more than picture quality or bells and whistles. Can she figure out how to turn it on/off, up/down, change the channel.

Are the remote buttons user friendly?

That sort of stuff, good luck.

I think it will be fine. She will use the standard Time Warner cable remote, unless she goes surround, then I'll get her a Harmony. Price really isn't that much of a concern, just within reason, so adding a remote wouldn't be the end of the world. I can set it up for her, so that won't be a problem either.

Plus, if she ever goes without cable, she might enjoy the built in decoder.

For the size and price, I haven't found anything that can compare to it.

I've got a first gen one... except mine does 720p & 1080i as well (or JR just didn't get their facts right?) anyhow, it's got a slight overscan problem on 480 input, but otherwise, i've no complaints. I could probably get it serviced, but it's not bad enough to give the morons that CC uses around here the chance to make it worse.

I noticed several new units appeared to have a problem with the picture distorting on the top corners, as if folding inwards instead of staying straight and filling the entire screen. PQ they were fine, but not Sony.

I used to like Samsung but now have issues with them. Not quality, but ethical.

they still make nice TV's though, but I think I'll take my business somewhere else when it's time for me to upgrade.

I have issues with Samsung too. I have been through 3 replacement TVs with them because my DLP sets keep breaking down. Now I am waiting to see if they are going to refund my money or replace this set as it has no picture...AGAIN.

I saw this at the store and I didn't think that they were any less shallow. They just trimmed the fat around the edges if that makes any sense...

but next to a toshiba theaterwide I thought it looked fine with 720p

We ended up getting her the Samsung, strictly because of size and price.

I've been waiting to update this thread so I could get a chance to look at it, but still haven't been over there yet. I had it delivered to my house, and my mother-in-law and FIL picked it up because I was sick that week.

Hopefully within the next week or so, I can do a reasonable evaluation and get back to everyone.

The only problem I had was JandR's shipping(shipped freight). I ordered it on a Monday and it didn't even get shipped out until that Thursday. JR's pricing is great, but every single item I've ordered has run into shipping problems.

Speak of the devil, while reading this thread, I just got a call from my friend who is fed up with his Samsung DLP.

    Anyway, I like the slimfits.

All of the negative feedback about Samsung is depressing. That is one of the main television brands I can get from my distributor. I can get other brands as well, but they have good size/price ratios for their televisions. Guess I'll just have to push the 65" Sharp LCD when it becomes available to me :)
