When you've grown up on great music from great musicians, it's hard to "settle" for many of the newer artists who can't even begin to sound as good as the artists in the past such as Nancy Wilson or Sarah Vaughan, Phyllis Hyman or Etta James. Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson and others who have come on the scene lately simply aren't in the same league, IMO. In fact, since most of them don't have any real style of their own, they copy the styles of others. They sing music that has no soul.

Oldie-ish but goodie in the vein you speak of... IMO

OK, with y'all's help I got out of my music slump (at least for the moment). Bought me some new CDs so I'm cool for a few more months of listening. I bought a few CDs from artists I already had, so I know I'll enjoy those. Picked up some new ones, too, like Walter Beasley, Sarah Vaughn (one of her later works), Kendra Shank (awesome!), and Ernestine Anderson.

I got out of my slump by selling off all of the CDs I never or very rarely listen to (about 30 of them), and replacing some of them with new stuff. It's a great purging exercise, especially if your taste for music changes over time.
