The "too low to advertise" is because many manufacturer's have a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policy. The retailer can't advertise the product below a certain price.

The Onky is $3200 or $3400.. I called this morning. When the "three" came out of his mouth I pretty much zoned him out.

I know that is true with the likes of Bose, but not Onkyo.

That's one of the reasons that Fry's prices their ads with the "before savings" price and shows the savings in a bubble above the price.

The difference is that while, for example, Onkyo can not be advertised below the Minimum Advertised Price, it can be sold below it. Bose doesn't allow their products to be advertised or sold below a certain price.

Many brands have MAPs, and it is easy to see in the Sunday ads. They usually say something like $999 before savings.
