Hey Mark,
I was just checking out your system showcase (which kix serious **** btw) and I like the way you have your front mains mounted on the wall in your HT set up. This is something I may want to try out because I don't want to mess with my 2ch stuff. I see it as a great opportunity to introduce 5.1 into my existing 2ch rig.

My question is... I'm just wondering how the mains sound in your set up. I know it's not optimal but just wondering how everything is working out for you. I plan to do this with some small Klipsch or Pdigm speakers. The front of my TV is 22" away from the wall. Do you think in-walls will work? Problem with in-walls is I can't aim the speakers to the sweet spot. Center will go on top of the television.

Thanks

Maurice

Polk inwalls have aimable tweeters, so you can aim the speaker at your sweet spot.

Thanks for the help, Airplay. Those Polks are a little more than what I'd like to pay. Not really looking for fancy stuff, just some speakers that can go loud enough for my HT needs. So far I'm guessing small bookshelfs like the Pdigm Atoms or maybe the small RTi mains would be my best bet because they're cheap and I could angle them. I'll go to the dealer and see what kind of deal he could give me on the Polk in-walls. But I think I'll need the woofers pointed at me as well because they'll be a little high up.

Imagine how happy my parents will be when I go in their room, take back my H/K HT receiver and replace them with NAD seperates LOL.

*edit* So far I'm thinking Polk Monitor 30 or R15 or Klipsch RB-15. If I go Polk I'll get the cheapest rears I can find, from Polk of course but will definitely get the matching center. Or maybe I might go for a HTiB. ****! The selection is endless for a fun project like this LOL.

Maurice - Thanks for the compliments :D I'm down with your setup as well tube addict ;)

Sonically I have no problems. I also calibrated everything with DVE, so if there was an issue, there isn't any longer. My TV is the same distance from the wall as yours, just FYI.

If I was able to this all again, which I will eventually, I would go 100% inwall as it's actually my preference for an HT.

I love the idea. Polk has some really outstanding inwall designs. I only mention Polk because of hearing a few of them, Klipsch or Paradigm would be cool also. If they have adjustable tweeters, I think you'll be fine, if not....I can only presume that you may have an issue. The width of the L&R placement will have more to do with your directed soundstage than the fact that the CC is closer to the listening area.

Is their a reason that you don't want to go inwall for the center channel as well? Just wondering. You could also mount the current CC on the wall, add a couple doorstops for tilt or use an adjustable bracket.....just rambling. I hope I answered your question. Let me know if you need anything else, or want to mull over some other ideas.

Thanks man. You're one hell of a tube addict too:).

OK, one thing I forgot to do before posting this is ask my mom. I showed her the Polk in-walls and she said "NO". So in wall is a no no. She want's me to go for the Monitor 30 instead.

It's good to know that your TV is at the same distance as mine to the wall. I was a little worried about the center being quite far ahead of the mains but looks like everything should be fine after sound calibration. I have a lot of space to play around with so width with the mains should not be a problem. The mains must be placed 66-68" off the floor though. The center on the wall is an excellent idea, thanks. That should be very easy to do with parts from a hardware shop instead of fancy mounting brackets I'll need for the mains.

OK, so far I feel Polk will give me the best bang for the buck. I'm talking Monitor30, CS1 and still undecided on the rears. Problem is, I sit right against the back wall and really don't know how I should place the surrounds. When I had my RT system, I had a pair of RT5 at ear level but I didn't like that. I like to get that theatre feel with surrounds high up.

I'm OK on the sub because I'll use the LFE input on my PSW650. The pre is connected to the L&R input. So the sub will serve double duty.

One thing I can see this system being really good at is low volume late night listening when I don't want to use the tubes. Having those mains high up will give me that feel like I'm at those nice bars with decent PA systems.

I'm getting excited already. I plan to get this done by very early 2006. Probably around Jan-Feb if everything goes well.

That sounds good so far, you can't win every battle. The Polk would be my choice, but I'm certainly not trying to steer you in that direction.

You could place the surrounds on the floor behind your couch, face up and get the same general, yet indirect effect. It's actually a Dolby suggestion if I recall correctly. Just bump the couch out a couple inches. Unless it's a dedicated HT like RonP, Gonzo, FrankZ, etc. you have to make the best of the situation. My HT may not be up to their respective levels, but I'm sure they would still enjoy the movie....know what I mean.

My HT mains are 74" from the floor but are adjusted 7deg down and 1deg in. This is just so you know it's not unusual.

The center channel is the most important in any HT, so don't slack in that area.

Thanks again for the help. I will go Polk with the Monitor30 mains, CS1 center and probably another pair of 30 for the rears.

I've tried the speakers on the floor facing up thing a few years back and didn't really like it. I'll probably mount them on the back all facing eachother. Seems to be the best thing so far.
