I did get to watch a professional women's tennis match once, and I was seated in front, on the long end, facing the player's butt. Great view!:D

it all started with Monica Seles.

Before her- grunting was considered un-lady like and forbidden in the sport of Tennis.

I'm a huge fan of professional tennis and it's never bothered me one way or the other. As long as the competition remains tight i'll keep watching. =)

Why didnt I think of that one?! ;)

Monica Seles was always my favorite. The first tennis match I ever watched was between her and Capriatti in the finals at the French Open 1991. I believe she wouldve been as good as Stephi Graf had not that **** stabbed her!

Grunting for EVERY swing is ridiculous.....it sounds way overdone and IMO is more of an irritation.

not if you've played Tennis on that level it's not. The competition is fever-pitched. Are you telling me that basketball players, hockey players and football players don't make grunts or other noises when exerting energy ? Come on....

This coming from a Tennis player.

Grunting has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the player.

Plenty of players that would kick these lil chick's asses played for years and didn't grunt to let everyone know how good they thought they were.

well I can tell you from experience that grunting during a swing is an effective way to harness that last bit of energy to your advantage.

And if you've noticed since the days of Pre-Seles that serves and ground strokes have gotten alot faster since.

In your opinion, what about the distraction theory?

When I was in high school, I was on the badminton team. When we play, we grunted a lot too....but one tends to tune that out when the game is in play.

Distraction Theory- shooting free throws with 20,000 fans screaming...

Different sport- but distraction is distraction anyway you slice it.

(EDIT) While grunting maybe annoying in Tennis- I accept the fact that the game has also evolved (for better or worse is irrelevant) over the years- as with most other sports.

Again- regardless if they grunt or snore- as long as the competetion stays intense and the sport remains true to itself- then i'm all for it.

I think she does!! It was shown on the US Open highlight show last night. Not being familiar with women's tennis, I don't think this is the norm, is it?
