Polkie's On The Move....

I recently had the pleasure of seeing a couple Polkies in this month as they were passing through....well since they were buying speakers from me I guess they had no choice :)

Steve(Shack) went to the Carlyle T-Bird show up in PA and then stayed at the Dorokusai Inn that night for lots of music, demo's and of course a couple beers. He was in town to pick up his new SDA1C's that he has been so patiently waiting to receive. It was great to see Steve again and talk shop. He's such a laid back guy and an absolute pleasure to talk with about all kinds of subjects. The fruit bat even liked him, and she's typically a tough sell ;) My stupid arse didn't get a picture of him, but perhaps I'll crop him out of another photo, haha.

Steve has some CRAZY stories that will have you shaking your head....LOL I'm still laughing at a couple of them :)

As always, don't be a stranger old friend Steve. See ya' at the next Polkfest!

Just today I met an OLD SCHOOL Polkie, Bob McGowan and his very cool GF Gerri. He is from the class of Polkies that makes even me look like a super noob :) The McGowan boys and crew are who schooled most of us new age Polk Guru's and the like in one way or another. Bob was traveling and doing all kinds of things for his passionate hobby, period re-enactments, and decided to drop by and pick up some Carver Amazings on the way home. He couldn't have been a nicer guy and is really interested in all things musical. We jammed on his new Carver children, talked about gear and traded information on music.

I was especially blown away by his enthusiasm in his hobby, which is in another thread that I'll link below. He is very historically educated about the US and essentially the birth of the nation. It was engaging conversation to say the least.

Bob's Re-Enactment Thread

Rock on Bob, safe trip, and tell George you have found "The Truth" :)

This is what this forum is all about folks and that's hardcore man, hardcore. Here is a picture of Bob at the house....thanks for reading.

Great hospitality at the Dorokusai Inn! One thing for sure... Mark definitely married UP ( if you know what I mean....) We had pizza and salad ala' the great Chef Doro (I actually saw him make it and still ate it). Of course the beer and Jack Daniels would have taken care of any issues with the food. We spent the evening lisitening to lots of good tunes on his Maggies with the low end augmented with a little SVS.

Thanks for putting me up for the evening....

Funny thing though....When I woke up the next moring MY hair looked just like Bob's. I thought it was just the way I slept on it....

I'm dropping in for a quick vist here from my sister's place which is just about 15mins away from Mark.

It was a pleasure meeting Mark. He's is a great guy and a fine host who just happens to posses some serious equipment. We had a really good time and just wish we had more of it. Mark was kind enough to give me a new pair of '69 Jen 5814A tubes to try in my CAL-ALPHA. How great is that? Thanks for turning me onto some new music, I'll definitely be adding some to my collection.

The CAs will go into my main HS when I get home and the 2.3s will be retired at least for a while. My plan is to upgrade the crossovers in them which will probably be a wintertime project.

I'm about to leave here shortly and head for the Grand ranch. Thanks for the fine time, the fine speakers and the Jen tubes Mark. I hope we can get together again sometime.

Hey George, I'm on my way......

Just to clarify, the CA's are fine and we worked the shite out of them prior to any formal transaction. Don't kid around like that Ted....at least add an emoticon brother.

Bob and Gerri were waiting in front of the house when I got in from work yesterday.

Bob is completely out of his mind in a truly wonderous/charming fashion, and Gerri is a sweetheart. It was a great visit. The only sore point was my wife, the former Theresa Talamonti, was not in attendance as she left early yesterday morning for a weekend long conference in D.C.

I got a very early morning e-mail from them to say they arrived back upstate NY safe and sound.

    George

A pleasant surprise was a bottle of Gosling's tribute rum, carried up from Damascus by Bob and Gerri. Thanks for the shot Mark!

Man, are we beat! I'm running on reserve about now with only a few hours sleep. I lost track of time but we left the Grand ranch somewhere around 10:00pm and got home at 4:30am. Slept a bit and then started the arduous job of unpacking and doing laundry etc.

George Grand? What can I say? I've waited a whole lot of years to meet him. I've known George for six years now but felt like I've always known him. However we never hooked up until now. One outstanding guy and family! My instincts were right on. George has been there with me through good times and bad. He and Theresa were a source of both information and comfort to me while my mother was battling cancer. They will never know just how much that meant to me. I thank you for that. I really wish I could have met Theresa but she was headed toward DC while I was leaving. Next time I hope.

We had some cocktails and pizza, listened to some tunes and shot the wind about a maraud of subjects. A good time that will have to be repeated again sometime.

I've got a photo to upload but my 'puter isn't reading my CF card for some reason. I'll do it later at my dad's. For now it's back to unpacking....

She'll be here next time for sure. She and Gerri would hit it right off.

Bob was already here at the Polk Forum when I arrived. Him and Mike were among the real old hard-core SDA guys. My first experience with sending things to perfect strangers was when out of the clear blue, Bob sent me a set of speaker cables that he had handmade. "Here, try these out and if you like them keep them and just send x dollars someday."

The cables worked out and so did his technique.

Well, I got the Carver Amazings hooked up and running last night. AWESOME!!! It took a couple of attempts to get the sound just right with them but I did and I ROCKED the house till late. Thanks Mark for the deal and thanks George for getting me and keeping me interested in them.

Learn something new every day.... I just got them and already have become somewhat educated in the ways of them.

Not too long after puting them to work I started noticing degraded tweeter performance. Just a little bit at first at certain frequencies at high volume levels and then slowly as time went on over a greater freq range and eventually to a point at lower and lower volume levels. Hummm I says and went straight to the Carver Forums to read up on the ribbons. Ah-ha! Got it. Humidity. And was it ever humid in the HS room!!! (AC is in the HT end of the house.) It was late so I waited till today to make a phone call. I called up Dave S. to pick his brain. He agreed that it sounded like humidity was the culprit. I went at the ribbons with a hair drier as he suggested (and I had read about) and it cleared the problem right up. Then I was off to Home Depot to pick up a Maytag de-humidifier. This should put an end to the problem for good.

AND: Come to find out, Dave is only a couple of hours away from me and has friends in my area. What a small world indeed.

(Still don't have the photos yet.)

I had the same issue when I ran them upstairs...hence the basement placement. It's nice and cool down there as well.

It looks as though this is a common problem. They'll be ok if I can keep control of the humidity.

Here's a shot at the Grand Ranch.

Wow, sounds like a FANTASTIC trip, Bob. Everytime I travel 95, seems I've got to add a couple of days now to visit all the cool folks on the way and I get disappointed when I miss someone, as in the last trip, I didn't see Mark.

Looking fwd to hearing your observations on the Amazings as well.

Ya think? Try carrying a SDA 1C up the stairs with a pug running between your feet on every step. Mark tried to "wear Cali down" by playing catch, etc. so she would sleep....Never happened. The Energizer Bunny has nothing on her!
