So this past weekend I spent the day in the garage helping a friend build a sub box. We started about 7:00 and didn't call it quits until about 11:00 or so.

I went in for a few minutes around 8:00 or so to gram some water, and when I opened the door from the garage I was blown away by extremely loud music. It turns out my wife was watching the U2 Rattle and Hum concert in HD on INHD (sounded really good by the way). I pulled out the SPL meter, and measured at about 103 db.

My wife's really cool me having whatever I want in the living room, but she's never really understood why I need all that.

She told me that night "Now I see why you have this big TV and those loud speakers and that big subwoofer in the corner".

I was like "Yeah!!!!!":D :D

Just thought I'd share, it's cool when she can share your hobby with you...

    I hear ya!

My fiancee LOVES to play XBox with me in my theater room, which has an 80" screen with the picture from an Infocus X1. I have Polks all the way around and a dual 12" Adire Shiva subwoofer. She absolutely loves it :D

My girlfriend likes loud music, but I have yet to really introduce her to the monitor 10s. Maybe now in the new house, since I'll be able to properly set them up. I can only hope that if I some day get married to her, she will continue to be as understanding of my hobbies as she is now! (ha!)

my g/f loves to listen to music and watch movies but neither very loud. Plus she hates bass so my Sunfire isn't a very loved item to her. But she can appreciate well recorded music when she's in "the captain's chair." But all that aside, she's by far the most supportive person I've ever had in my life so no matter what I do/buy, she's ok with it. She's a keeper. ;)

    Now for something completely different……..

When I got divorced about 4 years ago, which was a very amicable situation to begin with. We sat down to “negotiate” who gets what, she told me right away “don’t worry I don’t want any pieces of your stereo”. I thought that was pretty cool. If she was really vindictive she could have insisted on having my system, or parts of it. She new that was my baby and she left it alone.

Several past g/f’s haven’t really noticed, other than my obsession of listening while sitting in the sweet spot and having to be completely quite. All have noticed how “good” the system sounded, but very uninterested in my explanation of why (too technical I guess). I get a lot of “rolled” eyes  from g/f’s and female friends.

Start by broadening YOUR horizons. Ask her what movie SHE wants to watch, then grit your teeth & watch it with her. Point out bits & peices that get your attention & bring it to hers. Gently start adding a few action adventure movies. (Ones that have decent storylines.)

To get her into Star Trek, start with The Wrath of Khan or better yet the TOS original Space Seed that begat TWOK & then The Voyage Home. They might not be your favorites but they were big hits with the general public. Once she hears Ricardo Montalban's wonderful voice, she'll be hooked!

You don't have a surround system if it's just 2.0!:D Since she is making noises about it, what the hell are you waiting for? Grab her and start shopping for new equipment! Make her a part of the process & she will slowly come around!

Sheesh, this isn't rocket science, just common sense! ;):D

Actually, I've been happily married for 14 yrs, but had to go away from the hobby due to kids. Just got back in a few months ago and she's been very tolerant to an extent. She hasn't said too much about the 10 pairs of speakers in the family room and closet. Just keep telling her they're not all gonna stay once I decide which one's to keep and which to sell. She appreciates good music, but she'd probably be fine with a mini system.

I fall in between. Evry time I try to discuss upgrades I get the look (not again) or don't even mention it. Well my seed gets planted (take the mind out of the gutter). I will then tend to this seed later on, bring up the upgrade. Well then the day comes were I get the new piece of gear. Every time we listen she comments " I didn't think it could get better, but it does" sometimes she tries to understand the lingo and facts, her boss who is a friend of ours as well, was buying new speakers, she started asking him about the freq. range , she told me the whole story how she was talking about the gear we have and all the time she was mis-matching facts. I thought it was cute as hell she was trying. Thats all that matters....but I did correct her.

I know what you mean, just a couple of days ago I heard the wife saying to the babysitter,"have you ever seen so many speakers in you life". When the wife and kids went to KY for a wedding a couple of weeks ago, I replaced the receiver while she was out not thinking she'd notice but she did, quickly. She wasn't upset because I had "planted the seed" before she left. And I finally hid all the components inside the cabinet like she wanted done for years now. That's probably why she didn;t mind so much. I like to leave them out for view, but with a 5 and 7 year old and a teenage babysitter, its probably best they're out of view.

We sometimes go to a friends place who thinks is all about watts, he has a JBL HTiB powered by a yammie 5790 (good receiver). He likes to play his music loud ( he has too he has a 3000+ sqft open concept home) my wife always says "god it sounds awfull it's not set up properly. I sit back and smile

I know people like that also. Infinity, Cerwin Vegas and the sort are very efficient and extremely loud, but to me theres no SQ just SPL's. It's like those old Bose 901's, hated their sound. Like the old saying goes,"no highs, no lows, must be Bose".

I have a friend, my best audio/music buddy. We both have a huge interest in music in general, he is a very talented drummer. His set-up leaves a bit to be desired, IMHO. He's very happy w/ his "sound" but to me it sounds awful. He's creating a "wall" of sound in his basement, which is now his media room.

Denon 3805; Cerwin Vega mains; (2) Cerwin Vega bass scoops (passive); Polk PSW-650 (cool-my reccomendation);Audio Source center speaker; (4) Cerwin Vega surrounds-4" 2-way 2 mounted to the side and 2 mounted in the rear; Single Polk RTi 25 mounted in center rear. Problem is timbre matching ??? Non-exsistent. Calibration ???? Non-exsistent. Loud thumping pulsing sloppy bass ???? Absolutely. It's just not my style of system. He's always running it some kind of effects mode, which I hate.

He's running all this off the Denon...no outboard amps, probably doesn't need them. The CW's are pretty effecient speakers.

    Comments about the ex.....

She was always appreciative of the sound and could hear a difference, just never interested in how it ewas achieved.

Those are two very different brands of speakers you use for examples. I'll agree with you on the CWs but not the Infinity. I have owned or lived with CW, Infinity and Polk and I love the sound out of the Infinitys. If anything Infinity is lacking in bass and definitely not good for SPL. I must admit, quite sheepishly, that I also once owned Bose (Hangs head in shame) but those are long gone to the pawn shop. I know it depends on the model of Infinity speaker as far as how good the SQ is, but I've never heard of them reffered to as SPL speakers before.

    Just my .02

All of the SM series I've ever heard were only good for one thing, IMO, loud rock and roll. That's not to say that's a bad thing. I have heard some vintage Infinity's that did have a nice sound, though. I was just generalizing. My uncle had some vintage CV's when I was a kid that at the time sounded pretty good to me. At that time though I was and still am to a degree partial to acoustic suspension designs. Polk has moved me away from that a little. To me PR designs are sealed, also. My Mon 10A's are just about as airtight as it gets.
