any value in'60's Fisher dual tube amp stereo, with big speakers.

I have a 1960 or '61 Fisher stereo. My family bought it when I was in maybe the 10th grade. It has a Garrard turntable, an AM-FM tuner, a tube amp for each channel (85-100watts?), 2 furniture grade cabinets each housing 3 big speakers. (10-12 inch?).

I am not sure about the turntable but all else works. I used it as my stereo for years and moth balled it in 1994 when I bought my first CD system. Still sounded quite good to my ear then.

Question: with all I hear about folks still digging tube amps does anyone suppose there is some value to this rig? I would be interested in some considered opinions.

Thanks,
michaeld newbie

Cool! Do you have some pics -- especially of the amps? And, any model numbers would be helpful (amps or speakers.)

If you haven't turned on the tube amps in a while, like since 1994. It's probably isn't a good idea to try to turn them on now, I'm pretty sure thats a good way to blow something up.

Not to offend but, my dad always says Fisher is junk-I know he used to be pretty "hip" on the audio scene in the late 70s early 80s. This true?

By that time Fisher wasn't what it use to be. The earlier Fisher tube gear is pretty good stuff.

I could think of a few Fisher items that I would like to have such as a Fisher 500-C receiver.....

Ok, found a "C" and this tidbit, "The Fisher 500C is a 75 watt receiver that uses four 7591 output tubes. It is a surprisingly good sounding unit, as is all the Fisher gear from this era. The tuner is FM only (the 800C is identical to this unit, but also has AM). In it's stock form, it sounds quite good, but like all vintage gear, benefits from modern capacitors and resistors. If I had to build up a simple low cost system, this unit would be at the top of my list."

You need to speak up then Troy, because Uncle Charlie has 400's, 500's, 600's and 800's that will ALL be headed on down the road in the near future.

Ok. The unit mentioned in the thread lead is :

    Fisher model 510 2150 b. the main amp has a tag that says 510-st, 110w, sn21507.

the channel B amp sez chassis 30-A, 85w, sn 35163. There is a tube layout diagram on the back of the cabinet for the main amp.

I have pictures if anyone is interested. However, you will need to hold my hand to help me get them posted as I see no "click on this icon to post pix" anywhere. I must be missing something or I am just ignorant. Ya'll let me know what you think.

BTY the speakers are all about 6.5 inch. I see no crossover. the magnets on the back are not all the same size. one speaker in each cabinet has a rather large magnet compared to the other two. As I said I recall the sound being very good from this unit, rich, smooth and good presence of mid ranges. compared to modern rigs it may suck. besides my right ear doesn't hear much at higher freq due to various trauma back in the '60's.

michaeld- If you'd like, you could email them to 94rangerdood@gmail.com and I'll put 'em up on here.

If not, you just have to wander down to the "attach file" section below where you type your post in. Click on browse and then go find the pictures. Be aware that the maximum file size is around a meg. You can only attach one at a time this way.

    Mike,

Can you list the tube compliment at least? 110w and 85w are power consumption ratings, and those are VERY low, especially for tube gear.

    Anthony,

Hell no. These are vintage, very sought after, clean, and sold in full working order. We're not giving these things away, there isn't and endless supply of the stuff. They'll be priced right, and one can buy with confidence.

    Cheers,
    Russ

I sent pix of the amps and such to nadams hopefully to be posted soon.

russman (anthony): one of the pix is a tube call out diagram for the main amp.

Class AB, push pull 6BQ5, probably 8-11 watts,

Neat looking stuff, the chassis amps aren't worth a whole lot, on the order of $50-125 each - but sold as an entire system might be worth more to a local buyer.

nadams: thank you for your effort. does anyone want any of this system? anyone living near Ashville NC or Charlotte will be fairly close if you want to see the system. More pix available. Make and offer???

russman: thanks for your input as well. this old stuff has played Brubeck, Bollero and Bo (diddley that is) and had plenty of clean volume punch despite the apparent low working wattage. The cannons in 1812 overture rattled the windows. As I recall we paid $600 for it in 1960 or '61. Tall cotton in those days.
    Any offers??

BTW: I am looking for a good yet inexpensive (under $400) single disc CD player to go with my soon to be ordered HK3480 pushing a pair of existing Lsi-9's with an unamped sub. Any suggestions? Any opinions on the HK3480 before I write the check?

    Regards,

    Mike

The speakers are going to be GROSSLY efficient, and tube amps don't clip like solid state amps do. 8w of tube power, mated with the right speakers will play louder than anyone should care to listen to.

I thinking if I have use for any of it, the iron that is.

Shoot, tall cotton these days broham.

    Cheers,
    Russ

OK, I guess this thread should be finished. If anyone wants to offer on the amps or any other bits send me a private message.

Thanks to all those that advised on this subject, especially adams and Russ.
