The story I heard was early production of this model had "too much midrange", Polk added the "pucks" to the mid drivers to slow them down and tame the mid range down a bit.Dodd - Battery Preamp
Monarchy Audio SE100 Delux - mono power amps
Sony DVP-NS999ES - SACD player
ADS 1230 - Polk SDA 2B
DIY Stereo Subwoofer towers w/(4) 12 drivers each
Crown K1 - Subwoofer amp
Outlaw ICBM - crossover
Beringher BFD - sub eq
Where is the remote? Where is the $%#$% remote!
"I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us have...very hard to explain why you're mad, even if you're not mad..." -
Seems I've heard somewhere that they are set up on opposite sides as compared to other SDA's too. Very strange speakers.

BobMcG - that's a lot of drivers in those sda's. i've heard some good things about those sda's. i got a pair of rta-11's that i've had since '88. still sound great. those sda's seem to have the same tweeter and mid/woofer cones as my rta's. is this a case of more is better? is that 15" woofer powered or is it a passive radiator?

the things that go on when you're away. Lets see,
nadams, yup they are rather sexy speakers at that...
Toxis, on-line personal ads??? Can't say I'm familiar with them. Don't browse 'em and don't run ads in 'em. I'll have to take your word on that one.
CWK, Like PT says. Plus... Your 11's are closer to resembling the SDA 2Bs which are very nice speakers but are no match for the 2.3s. So, in some cases maybe bigger is better. I own both and it is the case between these two. Even the 1Cs which more resemble the Monitor 12 series 2s enjoy a nice edge over the 2Bs and they are the in-between size. I'm also very familiar with them as my brother has had a pair for years (along with a pair of 2.3TLs).
BMDP, Saigo! Got that right! I have a pretty full schedule for this year already including one film in June so far.
L&C, I guess this kind'a dates me. I turn the big five-o this fall. Wasn't brought up with or around jeans that well, just plain don't fit. Anyways, could you see me during my horse shoeing and rough stock rodeo days wearing jeans of the like out there today??? I don't think the beating from a bull would have been my only consern!!! -
You're fit and have a great pair of speakers ... that's what I meant to say. Have a great weekend!

Always great to see Bob chime in.......
A few months ago I was at hoosier21's pad and we were playing with a pair of 2b's and 1C's and damn if both of us didn't think that the 2b's were clearly superior. Why? I have no idea.
Granted, my 2.3tl's aren't going anywhere but I think that there is a lot to be said for the 2b's (and the CRS's)....

For us it was a personal matter of bass.
Mike used to have the 2Bs too until he bought the 1Cs. We actually each started out with the 2Bs at about the same. I bought mine in '88 and he in'89. It's been a long time sense we've had them together for a side by side shoot out but from what I remember...
We really like the speakers a lot but thought they could use a bit more bass punch. I eventually ended up getting the 2.3s and he the 1Cs. To us the 1Cs solved the issue we had with the bass quite well. He still has the 1Cs on one system as I have the 2Bs but he moved on to a pair of 2.3TLs for his main HS.
However, I can't stress enough though for those out there not that familiar with the SDAs, placement can mean a world of difference!
When I first got the 2Bs I put them into my system in place of another pair of speakers they were to replace and was fairly happy with them but I thought that bass wasn't their strong point. I re-design the living room layout and in their new positions the bass was so over powering (boomy) I couldn't take it. The speakers went from firing down the length (26'L) of the top of the "L" shaped room to firing across it (12'W top 20'W bottom). (The top wall is an interior wall, the side wall an exterior wall.) No matter how I shifted the speakers around on this wall and in and out from it the bass was just too much. The system was built with separates even then and tone controls were a thing of the past... So I did the next best thing. I rebuilt the system in the family room (30'Lx14'W) where I had built previous systems both firing down from an exterior bricked wall and across the room using an interior wall. I decided this time I would use the bricked exterior wall that faced across the room. Perfect. The best sound I had found anywhere in the house. I had solid, tight, under control bass. The 2Bs sounded absolutely terrific but they just didn't have the hit you in the chest punch I was looking for. And as I've mentioned before, I found the 2Bs to be a bit too fatiguing to listen too for long periods. A problem I don't have with the 2.3s.
Sometimes position IS everything in life! -
I hear ya Bob......
The 2.3tl's are tough to beat in the bass department.....unless of course you've got a pair of Amazings . I figger between those two pair of speaks, I can actually get the ol' homestead OFF the foundation!
When I first got the 2.3tl's, honestly, I could never get them dialed in to where I thought they needed to be.......then we put hardwood floors in the house and I've got them spiked: MUCH MUCH better. Plus, for the time being, I'm feeding them 575 wpc per side.
Agree though, position is everything and I think that the parculiarities of hoosier's room were the decisive factor (WHY, I have no idea) but the soundstage with the 2B's was superior, bass extension was pretty much a wash but the treble region, the 2B's were smoother and more open.
Again, you made my point, it all depends on your layout.

L&C, Thanks and have yourself a great weekend too!
I'm with ya Troy. Speakers can sound so different depending on their environment and placement.
My CRS+s are on an exterior wall in a small, somewhat unusual shaped ceiling room. This combination of the smaller SDA speaker, room size/shape and accoustics work very well together for some incredible sound. The highs are clear and the bass is impressive. Powerful without being boomy. The bass isn't as satisfying to me when they are placed in a large open room.
Yup, I probably should have tried to pick up a pair of available Amazings a while back but just didn't do it. Oh well, woulda, coulda, shoulda...
Ah yes, gotta love the 2.3s on a high wattage diet. Nothing like it. You're certainly doing 'em right! Feeding 750w per side into mine. Yummy!
