Some of you may remember the thread I started about my daughter winning the District spelling bee...
http://clubpolk.polkaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25555&highlight=spelling+bee

This morning we are leaving for Denver to compete in the State Spelling Bee, there was no regional meet for my daughter, she advanced directly to the state level. We have no idea how this is going to go, the information we got indicates that she might have to go head to head against 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, which I think is abit unfair, but we'll take it a step at a time. The kids have to take a written test before the competition to determine the actuall contestants in the final round. We are all nervous wrecks!! Rebecca is really stressing out but we are so proud of the effort she has made that what happens on Saturday isn't really that big a deal to us anymore.

Saturday? Why leave a day early for a spelling be?

Good question! Seems that while our daughter was doing the spelling bee thing, my son was in a Vocabulary Bee as well. He only mentioned it to Deb and I in passing and all of a sudden we're getting stuff in the mail about Daniel competing in the State-level competition! So Friday afternoon we get to watch our son compete...

and Saturday it's Rebecca's state level competition...

You folks behave yourselves while I'm gone.:)

Congrats! Sounds like both your kids would throttle my butt in those topics. I still have trouble forming complete sentances and the i before e thing...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that she learned to spell from her Mom.

    Congrats, and good luck!

Don't feel bad. I lost the spelling bee on the word "insipid". I spelled it "incipid". Six months of training down the drain.

Hey now, English is my second language. As soon as someone figures out what my first language is, let me know. ;)

That's great. I got into our school's spelling bee one time and placed 4th. I spelled cauliflower wrong. heh good times. Spelling and vocab are vital, atleast to me anyways, since I'm going to pursue a career in writing I think.

In 40 days I graduate high school and a forth of the kids in my class can't even spell... that's pathetic.

good luck to you and your kids!

Wow! What a stressful couple of days.

First off I need to pass on a huge Thank You!! from both Daniel and Rebecca. I printed out this thread and they read it on the way to Denver. They were tickled that people they had never met were wishing them luck. You folks really helped them stay focused.

Daniel's contest was a wee bit disorganized and space was at a premium. The 100 contestants were divided into groups of twenty and usher out of the main auditorium into smaller rooms for the first round. Parents were not allowed in due to the small rooms. We had to sit around for about 2 two hours before all the scores were tabulated and the winners were announced for the Final Field of 10. Before any announcements were made we were told that eight people had been selected and that a Tie-Breaker round was going to be held to select the final two. The eight students that were tied were lined up in front of the assembled family and friends and they battled through ten rounds before there were two students left. We know knew who the last two were and were about to find out who the first eight were. The first name was called....not our son. The second name was called......not our son. The third name was called....not our son. Oh No! Five spots left!! The fourth name....Daniel Z!!!!! YEAH Baby!! I got some from looks from expressing myself a touch to loudly.

After seating the kids they started in on the questions. The answers were multiple choice and the kids were given cards with the letters A, B, C, & D to hold up to indicate there answer. Their backs were to us so we had no idea what their responses were for the first few rounds. Finally one of the people involved with the competition figured out that the parents didn't have a clue as to what the answers were or whether or not their child was right or wrong. After they started again they told us which kids were correct and which were wrong. The final round was double elimination and Daniel did very well. Although he did not win first place he did place fourth and handled it with grace and dignity, far more than most adults could. He was hard on himself until we explained the odds of winning the first time out of the gate. He was competing against kids from the 4th grade through 8th grades. Daniel is in 6th.

Rebecca's day started at 6 am. We had to make it to the Convention Center by 8 o'clock to register. After getting settled in the room where the competition was to start we (parents) were asked to leave the room so that testing could began promptly at 8:30. Deb and I didn't like the idea of leaving, but rules are rules. After leaving the room we talked to a few other parents and compared "Spelling Bee Horror Stories." We counted the total number of kids listed as competitors...253!! That's a lot of kids, but was more surprising was that there were only thirteen 4th graders, Rebecca included. The competition was for students in the 4th through 8th grades. (I can't say that I was really pleased with this format. At the school/district level the kids competed against each other at basically the same level.) Following the written test we had to wait around for a couple of hours to here the finalists announced. Thirty-five students made it to the final Oral Round; sadly Rebecca was not one of them. She was heartbroken at not having made a better showing and shed a few tears that mom and dad helped clear.

We couldn't be more proud of our kids. They took it upon themselves to enter these contests and readily accepted the addition responsibilities of studying and keeping up with their school work at the same time. To be one of the top 253 spellers in the state at age 9 is quite a feat. Top be ranked 4th in the state in a vocabulary bee is impressive too.

    Thanks again for the support!!
