placing vifa's in R series?

This was suggested in another Forum. Anyone ever heard of anyone trying it? I would be curious how easy it would be and how the results would sound. Take a cheap speaker with complaints about the highs and mids and give it a overhaul where it counts.

I thought about adding the Vifa XT to my RTi's just for fun.

It's usually not as simple as replacing the drivers...certain woofers and tweeters need to be mated with a crossover circuit of certain specs, so you need to do some research, and it might end up costing more time and money than just getting a different speaker or just building one from a kit. You also need to make sure you have the right impedances.

I thought about doing it to my FXi30's to compliment my fronts better.
I believe the 3/4" tweets would fit a little better, but I haven't measured exactly.

If you are thinking about the Vifa 'nipple tweeters' like those on the LSi series, I believe that they are pretty particular about internal crossover specs.

While the drivers play a very important role, its really a 3 part equation.

Drivers, cabinet design and crossover. I've never tried it, but I don't know all that much would change. The bulk of money is spent on internal dampening, bracing and crossover design the higher you move up the chain.

I wasn't thinking the high end vifa stuff- maybe ~$20 per tweeter. I have a pair of R10's not being used, so maybe one of these days I'll get brave and experiment. If I liked the sound, and it was easy, maybe I'd consider rolling the dice with the R50's. Now, assuming I matched the crossover freqs with the specs of the tweeter, how would I know what the impedance of my current tweeter is and would it really matter anyway assuming I stayed in the same league (i.e. 1"silk replacing 3/4"silk).

If you are keeping the R50 crossover, one thing to check on a tweeter before you buy, is the spl curve. Make sure it goes down to 2.0khz before falling off, otherwise you will have a hole. That happened to me when I tried swapping my R15 tweeters into my R50s.

Hey Fulmer, have you replaced the tweeters, yet? I have the r50's and r30's, and am thinking about doing this, too.

No, haven't done it yet mainly because I can't find any tweeters that use the same diameter cutout. I don't have a drilling tool, so I'll be sticking with the stock tweeters. It's a shame because they're are some real nice tweeters out there for about $20 a piece. Oh well.
