    Now Hear This.

Simply wonderful speakers, a real treat to listen to. Now, do I keep these, or unload them - THAT is the $64,000 question.

1997 - $2200/pair, 6 inch midbass, 1 inch silk dome, 8 inch side firing woof, Piano black finish with spiked plinths.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Those look VERY similar to the current NHT ST4 speakers at $1000 a pair retail.

Zero, what was the model of those NHT's you showed me? I have some American Express Rewards points to burn and then have some nice NHT stuff incluing a pair of bookshelfs that looked alot like yours. If so, I might grab them. Either that or snag an NHT subwoofer.

Sean, not give-away, but less than a pair of their current, entry level bookshelves, on sale - that's for sure.

Marker, similar in finish, and size of driver compliment, and the buck stops there. This series evolved into the current Evolution series. Not knocking the SB/ST series now, but this is a completely different animal.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Very "2001" monolith looking.. nice eye appeal. Interesting that the Mfg. has more or less set the toe-in with the angled fronts.

So Russ, where are these in the pecking order? Ahead of or behind the FR's?
    More later,

Awesome looking speakers. I agree, the black gloss looks awesome. I really like the spikes too. Sounds like you're really enjoying them. Don't sell them if you know you're going to regret it. Are those passives or powered subs? How low can they dig?

    John,

The SB-3's are wonderful bookshelf speakers, but as Sean alluded to, you have to feed them high current, high damping power. Solid down to 39Hz and the metal dome isn't edgy to me nor does it have the sibilance problems so common in a lot of speakers. I'm surprised Mark made his comment as he told me he liked them.

Very good question. I'm sure the NHTs could do more things well, but how do they compare at what the FRs do best?

The NHT/Rotel setup that Jesse has is hardcore, and does sound very good. No power or current issues in that room :)

I like them, but I wouldn't buy them. I don't care for AL domes, period, and critical listening with them is not my cup of tea.

    Eh...Dont think so...

I have high gloss speakers (granted, not that high gloss), but I also have a high gloss tv stand that is like a freakin DUST Magnet...as are my Definitives... Yet when they are clean...

Pioneer Elite receivers are probally the most 'purdy' receivers of em all with this high gloss look...very nice...

    Man...oh man are they purdy!

    Those NHT look sweet!

And when is everyone going to get over this Armor-All BS?

    michael_w,

Mine are in my shop (read sawdust, etc.) and they actually stay pretty clean. The nice thing about high gloss is the dust doesn't stick to well.

    Thanks for the responses fellas.

I'm in a REAL dilemma now, as to what stays, and what moves on down the audio road. Stay tuned for more on that particular subject.

The finish is like effin GLASS man - WHEN it's clean. You should have seen them after I brought them in the house, and set them down. More fingerprints than the FBI has on file. I swear, it was like I just ate a bucket of the Colonel's finest, then proceeded to use the 2.5's as a napkin.

A little windex, and lint-free cotton towels took care of that in short order - but dust? EVERY day - especially on top - I can see each particle, plain as day. The gloss finish is more or less a mirror, so ANYTHING on it, is reflected infinately in the finish.

They sure are lookers though, imo, it's worth the extra 'care' to give them the routine wipe-down.

Sound wise, you don't want to know. These are one of those speakers you are better off NOT listening to, because once you do, you're ****, plain and simple - get the checkbook out and sign it all over.

    Cheers,
    Russ

many years ago... when i was looking for floor standing fronts.. it was between the Polks and the NHT's. I went with the Polks only because the price was better.. but i could have gone either way and been very happy.
