I went to drop one of our vehicles off for service yesterday. We use a local independent repair shop specialized in the brand (they don’t repair anything else).
They will NOT be closing. Business as usual for now, so the shutdown is not draconian. They are considered “essential” in the same way as gas stations.
We’ll see what happens for other businesses next week (Friday was a grace period).
Restaurants and cafés are bound to be among the hardest hit, so we’ve decided to order take-out from any of the neighborhood restaurants and cafés that offer the option (and even some higher end ones do), in case it helps to keep them in business.
20,000 of those cases were outside China, and the W.H.O. was still calling the outbreak an epidemic, but not a pandemic.
Now there are almost 290,000 cases. Over 200,000 of those cases are outside China.
Cases outside of China have multiplied x10 in two weeks.
There are almost 20,000 cases in the U.S.A. today, where testing remains very much behind other nations. If those cases are multiplied x10 within two weeks (and everything suggests that they will), we will have 200,000 cases here. In fact, as testing continues to improve, we could see a much higher number in two weeks.

This graph depicts the evolution of cases in the U.S. compared to Italy. I’ve added a column for the U.S. data from last night (March 20).
This confirms that we are likely to see very fast growth in the number of cases, and this is also borne out by the reports from @verb in his building at work.
In my immediate family, two more family members have been notified that they have been in contact with people infected with COVID-19. One of those people is a co-worker. He and his spouse have been put in a mandatory quarantine in Ann Arbor, MI.
That's pretty alarming. I'm wondering though if a better comparison (as opposed to 100th case) would be cases per million population, since the US has a population that is more than 5x the population of Italy.
I also heard that Italy only tested the severe cases, and we are starting to ramp up testing in a major way here. In NJ you only need to have a 99.6 fever, shortness of breath, and a cough to get tested in one of the drive ups.

So far, about 25k cases in the Us. Only roughly 270 deaths. That puts us at a tad over1% death rate. How is that curve comparable to Italy with their 8% death rate ?

The graph only compares number of cases, and how they progress by number of days. Our graph will look much worse than Italy because we were far behind in testing, but are now attempting to correct that. So the number of cases will no doubt rise dramatically here.
It is very difficult to compare death rates. In Italy, about 20% of identified cases have either died, or recovered. In the U.S., only 2% have died or recovered. So of all those that have been identified, but not recovered, many may yet die.
The death rate in Italy is likely to go down (the worst cases may have died first), whereas in the U.S., it may increase. Only time will tell.

I think the death rate in Iran is also very high. I suspect our death rate will increase as we learn more.

The U.S. case numbers from the John Hopkins University Tracker show that the U.S. now has the third highest number of cases in the world outside of China, behind Italy and Spain.
